California Prices for lame duck 2k1 SE AE

A friend of mine lives in Oceanside. He was shopping around and came across two 2k1 SE AE at different dealers. One was slightly used, I think 5k mi for $27000 the other, new for $28000. I was shocked that both dealers were firm on these prices.

That seems high to me. Are Cal prices higher than average? I'm in Canada and if I take list in Can pesos it comes out at $23500 or so.

Can any one shed light on this? I asked him to wait a bit til I asked.

Thanks and ... ..

Lame duck it is. I don't know why anyone would even want an SE AE now. Just buy a 2k2 Max SE. More features for probably less money. Invoice for a 2k2 auto Max SE w/sunroof is about $24,100 !

But you will not have "A piece of History" ie. 20th AE... Anyways they look a lot better than a plain jane maxima...IMHO

I'm up with Rob. I would take the 2k1 SE/AE over 2k2 SE. Would you like to be like everyone with a normal Max ( no offense to others and myself ) or have a somewhat rare AE? The AE is BA still and will forever be. And really? The options for 2k2? HIDS...tails...suspension, but nothing huge. If you really want the HIDs or tails you can buy some. You can't buy a TRUE AE anymore . IMHO.

I must agree wth 6.7WhiteMax

I have been there and done that with the Max (ie 95). Speed is great!! But overall ownership pride weights more. I haven't mooded my AE at all. Think about Corvette owners, old and new they all love their cars because they love the "car". I have never heard a vette owner (especialy a special edition type or rare year) want ot trade because a another model year is faster. So what!!! I cheer the 2k2's when they dust the comp, hell if I could I would by every gen max made because I love the car. If speed was that important, I would buy a old beetle mod it, and beat everybody and laugh in the face of all the suckers who bought $$$ (vettes, vipers, ...) cars and cann't even beat a little old beetle

We should not flame one year against the other, I consider us all in the fam, actually I think it's a mark of an a@@ hole who tries to post-up on their own. just my 2 cents

I love my max

No offense to any AE owners, but all it has is 5 more horsepower ala I30 tweaks (that some people can't find in performance numbers) and a lot of tacked on stuff like door sills and metal pedals...oh and lets not forget about the floor mats! Sure it has different seats ..but big deal. Most definately not worth $27,000-$28,000 for one with 5k on the odo!

All Nissan did was tack some stuff on a car to make it more desirable so they could ask more money for it....

It would make sense to take a 2k2 with more options 28 more horsepower and save 2-3 grand.

Desirable you say? Exactly. It's more desirable so you pay more $$$. And it shouldn't be that you nickle-and-dime every option/price/features. It's a special Max that comes along once every...20...years, and if you have the dough, you drop it for an AE. If you love the Max, you love the AE. I'd shell out the 2 grand if I had it.

too high

I paid 27K for my AE new over a year ago.

Check www.kbb.com

I would not pay more than 22K for the AE now, espicially with 5K miles. The new one is worth a little more IMHO.

IMHO I would pay a premium of 500 - 1000 over a comparable 2K SE. I would not pay a premium over a NEW 2K2.

Anniversary owners don't fret.......most of this site show adds to their 2k and 2k1 SE's of all or most of the extras that our Anniversary editions came with standard. Chrome sills, ground effects, specific front airdam, and even the silver key!!

The 2k2 does not shine in my opinion for only one real reason: the Altima. To close in price, power, and options. I like the HID's but still think our bronze headlamps look richer than 2k2's wierd lamp grouping. (most the time my headlamps are OFF )

The Anniversary Model was the "Best" model in the line-up in 2k1. I will always remember seeing it at the Miami Autoshow (roped off to public and spinning on the ramp) and then going out and buying the same car and color. I hope that another Maxima (6gen??) comes out with such fanfair but the 2k2 will be on the floor and open to all the public.

Save 2-3 grand? I have used the Nissan site and others to price out what the exact options, etc. would cost on a 2k2 (compared to my current AE) and the 2k2 car costs more!! We need to be very careful to quote exact options, accessories, etc. Are these cars running BOSE, leather, sunroof, Meridian, etc., and what is being used to compute a price on a 2k2 SE?

I agree the $27+K for the used one makes no sense...I got my AE new for that.

Also, as has been remarked, notwithstanding the engine, many of us don't like the 2k2's. My personal gripes are a stupid looking grill, front emblem on steroids, tacky ricer looking taillights, and hideous HIDS (they look like someone taped together an assortment of flashlights, and put a plastic cover over them). I don't care how well they work, I would upgrade bulbs or just use the ever popular high beams.

I didn't buy my AE because it was rare, or because of the door sills or mats or 5hp...I bought it because of the LSD

Back to the cost of the lame duck...I got my AE new in April just a little over invoice (Sticker was $28K with all options except Leather and Meridian). Invoice was around $24,900 and I got it for about $25,600 (I can't remember exact numbers). Since the car you are looking at has 5000 miles, I would offer $3000 below invoice. On the new one, I wouldn't pay any more than invoice.

In addition, I would look for the dirt cheap interest rates...3.9% or less.
