After cleaning the in cabin filter on my 02 maxima the air bag light started flashing. i even hooked up everything back correctly but no luck. by the way i did start the car when the connector was unhooked did that causes the light to go off and flash? before i go to dealer and get ripped off is there anything i can do to get rid of this problem? please help. Thanks.

I hda that same problem OC and the above procedure fixed my airbag light. Best of luck, that was a real annoying light because it is right in your line of sight with the road.

 

next time you take out the glove box, just simply unattach the plug from the glovebox
reset your airbags by doing the reset procedure

Did you try more than once? The reset procedure is pretty tricky.

 

Try it a few times, make sure the airbag is connected. Once you unplug it the light automatically comes on. Try it the timing is crucial.

OR, make sure to disconnect the negaitve battery cable when working on ANY yellow connector on a Maxima.

The reset procedure is very tricky. Although in past threads I have read, if you disconnect a yellow (Airbag system) connector while both battery terminals are connected you are basically forced to the dealer for a charge to connect to the ODBII port and push a button or two.

I bet you would be charged a diagnostic fee and then 1/2 hour labor to reset. If you have a good relationship with the dealer it might be better.

 

OC Guy, when I had to replace my power module, I did the EXACT SAME THING. I turned the power on with that yellow harness unplugged and my airbag light blinked for months. I tried the reset procedure in that link posted above about 7 times with no success. I was about to go to the dealer when I stumbled across this thread.

It's the same airbag reset procedure, but it gives an alternative way of doing it without all that specific timing. I tried it once and my airbag light is gone.

Basically says:



(1)Turn ignition on (not car). The airbag light will light up. Turn the ignition off IMMEDIATELY when you see the light go out.

(2)Count to 4 (1-mississippi, 2-mississippi...)

Repeat Step (1)
Repeat Step (2)
Repeat Step (1)
Repeat Step (2)

(3) Turn the ignition on and wait. The airbag light will light up for it's seven seconds, and then it will start flashing diagnostic codes. Give it a moment, it will flash a sequence.

(4) Turn the ignition off
(5) Count 2 Mississippi's
(6) Turn the engine on.

Voila, your light should be off. This way the timing doesn't have to be as precise. Took me only a couple minutes, and I got it right the first time. If you do notice that on step (3) the airbag light isn't just flashing but flashing a code (trust me, it won't be a consistent flashing, it will be looong on short off looong on etc), and the light remains on after step (6), you need to see a dealer.

 

It worked for me i just did step 2 twice and its gone. Thanks alot man you just saved me some money at the dealer. good job.

IS THERE A DIAGNOSTIC CODE "list" OF ALL THE FLASHES AND WHAT THEY MEAN

i had my tensioner replaced because the airbag light kept coming on and the dealer did it for free. Now my air bag light has come back on, and its flashing 1 long, and 2 short flashes. It was doing this when i had it serviced last time

I JUST DONT HAVE TIME TO DRIVE 23 miles GOING AND COMING to the damn dealership in my daily driver...ESPECIALLY WITH GAS PRICES

i was wonder if there was a diag code list to tell us what the flashes mean when they flash

 

If I'm reading the manual right (page RS-58 of the FSM, BTW), that's the "driver air bag module circuit malfunctioning."

 

wow interesting.....if i remember right, those driver side air bag modules are at least 400-600 bucks...before labor....If necessary ill get one from Dave B, and do the labor myself

BTW, would you happen to have that FSM in a PDF document that you could upload and link me to?

those air bag modules are tricky...You have to do a search i had an issue with my 99 and should be the same for this years also...you have to put the key in the ignition and press the driver side door switch like 8 times within 5 seconds and then start the car and that usually works.. it might take a few tries to do it but it did work for me and mine was long for a long time

 

sup guys, i went through with the procedure and i got one long flash followed by 7 short flashes, any idea on what that means?

Damn, this really works! I've been driving around with this flashing light for over 2 years after taking my dash out to paint it. Just ran across this thread yesterday and attempted it right before going in the house and the flashing light is gone. The Org never fails me.

I did the same thing by unplugging my yellow airbag connector on the passenger side and this was the only reset procedure that worked for me. No more flashing airbag light. Gracias

 

i tried this and I'm still getting one long flash and six short flashes... am i SOL?

once you have determined the code you can then read what the code means, so if you have only one code and you have read the blinking sequence correctly as 1 long and 6 short that would mean your error code is #16 and the error codes description can be found here http://www.vehix411.com/category/trouble-codes-dtc/

Successfully cleared flashing airbag light on my 2000 Maxima SE with longer 15-step procedure listed above (cycling ON 3 times, then starting twice -- see above for details). Thanks, guys!

Short procedure (push DDS 5x etc.) did NOT work.

Odometer just over 200K, by the way, and car is going strong. Glides on new Tokico Illumina adjustable gas struts (shock absorbers) and new mounts and springs.
Major repairs over the years:
Under 75K miles: Mass air flow sensor ($300). All 6 ignition coils ($70 each, done myself).
100K: Transmission fluid dirty, had to change filter & fluid twice to get it clean ($200).
125K: Replaced original starter ($350).
150K: Replaced original alternator ($350).
175K: Replaced vapor canister causing codes ($125 for used one).
185K: Replaced AC mix door actuator, sensor, and HVAC box ($1000), possibly after 1 year of AC hardly being used by daughter.
190K: Cleaned EGR ports ($400) to clear P0400 EGR and P0325 Knock Sensor codes. Replaced leaky rear valve cover gasket ($400). Replaced springs ($100 for parts) and worn struts, mounts & boots ($600 front, $500 rear incl. all labor).
190K: Replaced starter again ($500) with OEM unit instead of remanufactured one, like the one that failed after 65K miles.
195K: Replaced power steering pump, pressure hose, and return hose ($750).
200K: Rear main oil seal leaking very slowly but car runs great. Reset flashing airbag sensor ($0). Yay!

 

That procedure cleared my airbag light. 2000 Maxima. The other one I found (7sec on, 3 off, 3x, etc) did not work. Thanks!
