Need some help in choosing a Universal Muffler.

I want something that flows well and has good quality (full stainless).

I am ONLY doing the rear section so im pretty sure that just about ANY straight thru muffler will still be relatively quiet.

On my civic i had a Borla XR1 universal muffler which i paid $189 for. Don't really want to go w/ that again because on 2 occasions the hanger broke off the mufflers case actually ripping off a 1" section of the case (not happy w/ the quality...the case metal is TOO THIN)...

I am also considering the new Edelbrock mufflers which my local shop is telling me has great quality (only $100) and its full stainless steel.

They also said they could get me Flowmaster or Dynomax...but i dont want either of those.

Then they opened up an import parts catalog and showed me another brand that could work. Its called "TOUCAN". Anyone ever hear of that or use it? I've never heard of it before.

Any input is really appreciated.
Thanks In Advance.

I got one done. 2.5 " catback with a dynoMax ultraflo stainless steel (i know u don't want dynomax but I'm simply telling u what I have ). No resonator. It's not too loud, has a nice growl to it and most importantly gained 8 hp at the wheels after the change. BTW, on the DynoMax website, the DynoMax ultraflo had a better flow rate than Borla, Edelbrock and Flowmaster.

Peace...

yea...

a friend of mine flow tested a bunch of different aftermarket universal mufflers...
his results put the dynomax ahead of borla and flowmaster as well...
but the muffler that flowed the best out of all of them (oddly enough) was the Cherry Bomb VORTEX. Thats good and everything but the quality of that muffler doesnt seem to be very good...

i'm still undecided...

PS: 2K2DEMAX... you said you picked up 8hp at the wheels... was that JUST from the exhaust (or other mods included)... and if it was JUST from the exhaust...what exactly did you do? just rear section? cat back? y-pipe? Thanks.

Replaced everything from the cat back, 2.5" all the way. Welded on the 2.5" in/out dynomax ultraflo and a nice 4" stainless tip to finish it off. The 8hp gains were from that setup alone. The baseline I had before already included the intake and the cattman Y. Also, I did the dyno on the same dyno machine 2 weeks apart.

Peace...

variable muffler?

do you know if you have sacrificed any low end torque to get the extra 8hp on the high end? (without the variable flow muffler flap thang that nissan has put on our cars)

eventually i plan on getting a hold of a 2k1AE or infiniti muffler for +5hp and maybe a bigger cat back pipe(b pipe?) for +?hp. probably not tooooo much louder either

Well I'm not your typical car techie so I don't know for sure, but from the dyno plot, the torque ranged from 170 ft- lbs at 2000 RPM to a max of 189.3 ft-lbs @ 4100 RPM. Based on other dyno readings I've seen, I don't think I lost any low end. In fact, comparing my previous dyno plot, I've actually gained torque across the entire RPM band.

Unfortunately I didn't baseline the car without mods so I haven't the foggiest what the car was stock and therefore can't know for sure.

Peace...

Crimps before and after the resonator.
I was doing an oil change on a 2000 Camry and I got envy, looking at the exhaust. Almost perfect bends and round.... no crimps here....Hello Nissan stop wacking off back there and make some better piping....
The more I look at it ... the more I get pissed.

Yo!.... it's OK!.... this is the best part of it... when a manufacturer optimizes everything.. like air intake and exhaust... that leaves nothing for the aftermarket to work with... this is exactly why you only see Hondas getting lke 2-5 Hp on a Cat-back exhaust and like 3-5 Hp on a air filter... and if they are lucky 4-7 Hp on a full Header... Trust me, I know I used to have a honda, before this max. ( wife drives a Accrod V6, Stock)..... Now.. since you know what the most restrictive parts on the max are... go get aftermarket ones... We already have a Great engine... 222 HP... now I saw Turbo magazine dyno a 2k maxima, stock 189 HP... strap a HKS cat-back and wham... 7+ Hp... then a DIRECT replacement K&N... wham 4 HP.. that's not even a cold air intake... Then add a Y-pipe... 8-12 Hp easy... Thats 20-25 Wheel Hp that you can gain by just upgrading 3 things... I ma sure you will have over 245 HP at the Flyweel.... so don't be sad... Rejoice... because we have a bright future...
