$25k for 02 Max

Do you guys think this a good price for an 02 Max w/ a six-speed? The only problem is that I just bought my 01 Max se auto (only 4k miles) and still owe about 24k. The dealer is going to give me between 19k and 20k for my car. Do you think it would be smarter to try and sell my car privately? How much do you think i could get for it? I checked kelley blue book and i got a value of 23500. Is that realistic. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

p.s. by the way everyone is great on this site...i've learned so much from you guys. Thanks again!!!

Well private selling will always get you more than a dealer. I dont know if you will get what your payoff is, but if you do, GREAT!!!

Well an 02 max with 6speed has MANY prices, depending on the options you want. Well with everything on it except nav, the invoice is about $27k and msrp is $30.1k

So try not to spend more than $27k, but then again it is a HOT car since it is a 6speed, you might not have too much negotiation power, but it also depends what city you live in, if the car is a hot item, then you negotiation power decreases.

Yeah I think i'm going to try and sell it on my own. It is more of a hassle, but $19k from the dealer compared to
$22k or $23k from selling on my own is a big difference. Do you have any suggestions for the best way to sell it? I'm from new york (long island) and i'm gonna go back to the same place I got my O1 in staten island. The main reason i want the new max is for the six speed. So hopefully this goes smooth...thanks again!

I just closed a deal on 02 6spd max with a sunroof,mats and deflector for $25,221, I also got a killer trade in deal{$14,900 for my I30}!

If you sell your car on your own you will not get the huge tax break you get on trading in the car. In R.I. there is a 7% tax so if the dealer gives you $20K you will save $1400 on taxes, that makes you car trade you trade in value $21,400. If you ask me it is not worth going through the touble of tring to sell your car for a lousy $600 extra. I think 20K is about right because you can get a killer deal on brand new 2K1 right now. Good luck dude.

Hey emax,
thanks for the advice. Can u explain how that tax works a little more? The problem is that i still owe 24k on my 01. So this is going to take some thinking.

Good luck with your new max!!!!

Thanks dude, let me try to explain the tax to ya.

Say your tax rate is 7% in your state and you decide to go out and buy a $20,000 car. You will get taxed 7% percent on the 20K car, so tack on a extra $1,400 to the selling price of the 20K car. Now if you have... say a $10,000 car to trade in you will save $700 on the new car because the tax is only applicable to the to price diffirence between the two cars, in this case you would be taxed for $10,000, which meens $700 of taxes. It's simple really, I hope you understand now.
