5.5 Gen eating my wallet...

Since I got my 5.5 Gen in May of '07 I had to replace a dead alternator and battery, and the EVAP sensor and EVAP canister. It seems like this car gave me more problems than my 99 Maxima.

Pray you won't have to replace a MAF or a wheel bearing soon

sounds like routine maintenance to me. cars cost money to maintain. most people have spent WAY more than that.

++1 for routine maintenance on a car thats 5 yrs old and with (I'm guessing) over 60k miles. Be smart and set aside some cash for those "Murphy" type repairs that you know are coming sooner or later. (brakes, MAF, wheel bearings, O2 sensors, etc) it will make owning the Max so much more enjoyable.

Not major enough to warrant a thread, IMO.

So far on my 2002 gxe ive replaced the MAF, 2 O2 sensors, oil pan, tranny had problem(under extended warranty), rear calipers last friday....I love the car but im getting sick of repairing it...

Usual maintenance? I dont think so..How come does the alternator already dead??Whats the usual life expectancy of one of these?

Maybe not, I picked mine up off lease too with 39k miles and have had none of those issues. You never can tell how a car was driven by the leasee unless it was you.

My old Mazda 626 laughs at your cars problems.

Between early June and when it was totaled in late October:

1. Crank pulley came apart-Mazda only part due to the crank trigger on the back side of the pulley
2. Instrument panel lights burned out.
3. Fan relay.
4. Radiator replaced due to a huge split in the side.
5. Timing belt/tensioner/water pump
6. Coolant overflow tank replaced-3rd time in 3 years. Pressurized plastic tank and they all split in the same exact spot.

In 2006, I replaced the a/c compressor, alternator (original was replaced at 43,000!), tensioner pulley, coolant overflow tank and changed all the brake pads.

Not to mention the crappy leather on the driver's seat had split and the weather stripping isn't pressed into a groove like most cars but glued on instead. Guess what happens to the glue on 100 degree days when you have a black car?

Just one problem after another with that POS. I would gladly trade places with you if I still had it. 85 hp more and less problems!

It's normal to pay some money at the begining of owning a used car.
I have replaced the drive belt, blower motor, brake pads and flushed ATF, coolent, PSF.
Once you own it, you have to prepare to deal with it.

I gotta say, within the past two years of owning my Maxima, she has cost me quite a lot on the wallet just on maintenance/repairs. I'm not complaining, but if I made a list, I think it would be longer than of them posted here.

In my opinion, cars no matter what model lately have been made cheaper to cut production costs because cars made in the 90's were a hell of a lot more reliable than cars made now.
Yup my radiator went, tires constantly, breaks constantly, tranny slipped a few times (just topped off the fluid ) i feel the struts going, exhaust is getting loud (not by any modifications!) and nevermind all the SES problems/money THAT'S cost me.... but i stiiiillll love my Maxima.

I agree. All the new technology costs money and to keep the price of cars from going up too quickly, it seems like they use cheaper parts when it comes to sensors, alternators, a/c compressors, struts, etc.

but companies like GM and hyundai are offering 100k mile warranties... i don't quite understand that.. i just assumed that they were actually beginning to make quality cars

Cheap parts don't cost much to replace and it keeps people buying cars if they have the piece of mind of an extended warranty.

in canada what i noticed about those new warranties (160km/5yrs for GM/Chrysler) is that the amt of km they cover compared to the amt of time is verry different..It only benefits people who drive the crap out of their cars..you'd have to drive 32000km/yr to fully utilize the warranty..normal warranties are 5yrs/100k which is about 20000km a year-MUCH more common for most people.

I had 175k miles on my 02 before spending a cent on repairs. Then i had to replace wheel sensors and o2 sensors, which i think is still amazing. Certainly lost some good power though.

Mine has cosy me over $2,000 sinse i bought it in August. 1st it was the brakes, then the axle nut came loose somehow-$300 to repair, then the struts, now its making a terrible grinding noise from the front end. Im to the point where i want to trade it in.

sounds like minor problems to repair

alternator could of went if the car sat for a long time or maybe manuf. defect...which will kill your battery. EVAP canister is a common problem, especially given its location and no weather guard to keep rocks/road debris away. Be happy those are your only problems on a used car and not something outrageous like a dead engine or a burn tranny or worse, electrical problems froma flood.

Posting the amount of money you spend on a car seems pointless too, since alot of us do our own maintanance while others go to the stealership to get taken for a ride.
