Time to get a 350Z?

When I first bought my 5.5 I had a 3rd gear crunch...ok fine no problem very common...then I noticed that 4th gear had began to crunch as well, and now 2nd gear is crunching too. I have read about gear crunching and some seems to be normal but are these gears crunching an indication that the tranny is going to crap out on me soon? I changed to mt-90 about 3 months ago.

P.S. I just dont want to invest another 1500-2000 dollars into the car for maintenance when I know there is a demand for them in California, and if I were to get a Z it would probably be used and be in the 18000 dollar range which is 5000 more then what my car is kbb

So, are you comparing a fairly cheap tranny replacement vs a new car?

Best thread title ever.

Bad trans (<$3k brand new from the dealer) is reason for buying >$30k sports car?

EDIT: NmexMax is copying me

So because your transmission may or may not be going to crap you want to buy a new car?

I would recommend just getting the 350z engine and tranny, that way you keep the max, get RWD, and basically have a sick ride...

if you are doubting the longevity and durability of your tranny, replace it with an 04+ Maxima HLSD tranny. It is a fairly cheap swap and its something you could do yourself. A decent unit with low mileage should run you around $1500 or less...forget the Z, they are way too common now

And FYI, the Z's have an even WORSE record with it comes to 3rd gear grinding

Its the same cost as an 02/03 (Brand new that is)

And trust me, don't use the 6th gen transmission as a suggestion for a better transmission... Because mine has already broken in less then 20k miles.

thats just one case though and I wouldn't generalize based on that one...I've spoken to many people who did the swap and they have not had a single problem to date

But I didn't know brand new trannies (02/03) cost around $1500..thats pretty cool

So is gear crunching through many gears a prerequisite to tranny failure?

DaveB Quote is $1994 for 02 - 06 HLSD or Non-HLSD

Many people, dude like 4 guys on the org have done the swap that I have heard of.

And when I did my swap a year ago, I was the 2nd person on the org that did it (from my understanding). I also race my car... and have HP

That data is stored in the database for vBulletin (post datetime), so it shouldn't differ by any amount of seconds regardless of client settings or timezones. Weird.

No... it means your syncros are wearing... common problem in 02 / 03 transmissions. Almost all the 6-speeds seem to have the problem, but simply it is recommended to get it fixed or replace it. But transmission failure, this is transmissions failure.

People who have done the swap should not be limited to the org. Those who I was talking about actually are not part of this site...they keep their cars stock and actually their old 6mt's were holding up just fine but they wanted the HLSD, hence getting 6th gen ones..

Which is why I stated the org, there is no other reason to go with the 04+ Transmission unless you want to fix the syncro issue. And I figured most org members who had maxima friends or any VQ35 friends would recommend the org to their friends, unless their friends don't like working on cars / didn't know anything about them, in which case they would never experiment with parts from another generation let alone another year, no mechanic would make the recommendation

You realize that HLSD was an option in the 02 and 03 transmissions...

I had my transmission replaced 40k miles ago with an '02/'03 non-HLSD transmission and I have no problems. It depends on the driver/conditions/particular transmission.

To the OP: 350z trannies will do the same exact thing yours is doing now, so why spend that kind of money to fix a problem that bugs you so much if it is entirely possible for it to do the same thing down the road? IMO it was just a small annoyance and the only reason I had it replaced was because it was under warranty.

...yea man. All Im saying is that the people I mentioned before have 6th gen HLSD trannies in their 5.5s and have had no problems. Why they didnt go with 02/03 ones is beyond me. Im just stating what I know and hopefully it could give the OP another option since he has a hard time justifying $1500 (as in the 1st post) for further maintenance. Figured with a used 6th gen one he would have better luck saving some $$

I hear ya, though, I for an extra $500~ a new one is always better..

you never know what a used part already has wrong with it... or will have wrong with it in 1k miles

ok....this thread is going nowhere. Buy a new car if you want. Otherwise, have your tranny rebuilt with new syncros or replace the tranny.

There's no need for everyone to recount every tranny failure you've had.

Question has been answered, so /thread.
