Why not just replace the O2 you're getting the code for, clear the codes and see if you have any more problems?

Try the simple stuff first...

The downstreams don't. Not to anyone on here, anyway.

Exactly, no need to spend a hundred plus bucks a sensor that doesnt do anything when a 30 dollar simulator can fix it, those of us with headers run these and have no cel, or ses lights

Unless you want to know if your pre-cats are working. Could be a problem if your local e-test centre hooks up an exhaust sniffer rather just checking out codes.

Not if you have a fully functioning converter, it won't be a problem.

If your primaries are gone or dead, they DO serve a purpose.

You guys and your newfangled technology. I don't have any O2 sensors...hell, I don't have any exhaust. I run open heads on my car...

Anyway (back on topic), do they act as a 'backup' of sorts? I imagine that doesn't work all too well for the guys running headers with O2 sims there...

Oddly enough, Merlyn has been running for the past year with a downstream sensor in the front bank (idiot mechanic that installed them) with the only adverse effects being a rough idle and a CEL.

Yeah, back-ups. I didn't feel like installing my O2 sims yet, nor extending my primaries, so I plugged my secondaries into the primary port. SES, yes, closed loop malfunction codes, yes, city MPG 17, highway MPG 26, same as with the primaries.

That's true. But the main cat doesn't function at 100% until it is warmed up. That's where the pre-cats come in. I guess it depends on how they do the test.
