vias question

just got my 02 6mt last week and was looking to see what i can do for mods and had a couple questions. NWP sells a block off plate for the VIAS, whats the benefit of this? from my knowledge of the 3.0 00VI swap, the VIAS helps. why block it off? Also, i really couldn't find a solid answer but for the Cattman headers, in order for the PCM to set NO codes, you need an 02 simulator for the two secondary 02's and no other mods needed? Any input or links would be appreciated

thanks

i think the 3.5 vias gives the mid-range power, and taking it off will shift the power upto redline instead.

and in order to prevent codes, an o2 sim would work. a dual o2 sim, and if you need to simulate heaters, some resistors would be needed (DON't forget in series!)

you will still get codes once in a while with the o2 sims. Not sure why but I know I'm not the only one who has noticed this. Only way to guarantee no codes is to bung the secondaries behind the main cat so they still read some o2 and still stay hot.

If you remove the vias, and the shelf, you will lose some bottom end torque but gain top end horsepower

The block off plate is typically for those who gut the intake manifold by cutting away the shelf on the inside that the VIAs mechanism uses to change the runner length. This is done primarily to free up power at higher RPMs. Do a search for the term "SSIM" and you should find at least some of the many discussions on that.

Specifically, a dual output O2 sim, and you have either leave your secondaries plugged into the harnesses, or use the resistors as posted above. I've had the dual O2 sim + secondaries plugged in and ziptied under the engine cover, and have not had a CEL or code in over a year and a half.

As posted above, that isn't always true, unless I'm an exception to the norm. Also, extending the O2s behind the main cat isn't foolproof either, because it has to be done right, especially when you're dealing with the resistance of the extended wires, welding bungs, etc.

Anyway, there was some discussion here, FWIW:

The VIAS block off plate by itself is not worth it IMO, I would do the full SSIM which does do pretty good up top. Also you will need a dual output o2 simulator for the o2's or else you will throw codes. From what I have read these do not affect your A/F ratio but just throw an SES.
