the only real downside to synthetic ive heard (and im not sure if this is accurate or not) is that it is more likely to seep/leak out of your valve cover gaskets. its not a dramatic difference, like a VCG that leaks with synthetic will also leak with dino, but its something to pay attention to.
as someone who is now having to replace his valve cover gaskets at 47k, i know

IME, synthetics are superior in every other way. You need not do any flushing or other garbage when changing types. Just drain old and pour in new.
Too many people make this complicated. They change around viscosities, they try to overextend their oil change interval, they spend $15 for an oil filter. My theory is use synthetic and change oil and filter every 5k.

Other than I go 6k in between changes, I agree completely. I know some people go 7.5-10k on synthetics and I am sure that is perfectly fine. To my way of thinking though, more frequent oil changes are cheap insurance.
Using dino oil in my old Chevelle, I changed it every 2500-3000 miles. From the 55,000 mile point, my car was at the dragstrip every other weekend for a year and a half before I bought another engine with a lot more cam and compression. When we tore down the engine after pulling it, with 96,000 hard miles on it, the oil pan was absolutely spotless and all the cylinders needed was a clean-up hone. Other than the lack of cross-hatch in the cylinders, the engine still looked brand new inside, ever single moving component (cam, rockers, etc) were all still within spec.
