major power loss

my friends got an 01 AE 5speed with 110,000 and recently he told me the cars not performing right. i took a ride and the thing is a dog, i had a 96 auto that wouldve killed it (just a comparision). it feels very very sluggish. noticed a hissing under the hood, a coil was disconnected, after we reconnected it, it still felt the same. it doesnt rev easily. anyways just curious if any else has experienced something like this. any input helpful. thanks

Any codes? Was the hissing stopped after you reconnected the coil?

Codes would be nice, but possibly a MAF &/or coil(s)

thats why I was wondering if the hissing went away. A vaccum leak could easily rob the engine, as well as a bad MAF.

there was still a hissing, but it was night so i really couldnt see too much, i was listening around and it sounded like it was coming from the throttle body area. it did have a code for 02 sensor bank 1 sensor 2 malfunction. but i cleared it and just confirmed with him that it hasnt come back on. not sure about that one. so has anyone else experienced sluggish performance before there MAF went?

Check for air intake leaks. If you have an aftermarket intake, the slight hiss might be caused by the intake.

I have the same problem with my 03. It feels very sluggish and pings after 1,700 rpm's but no hissing sound. The engine doesn't respond as quick as it use to when I accelerate. I replaces the Mass airflow sensor, cleaned the valves and fuel injectors as well as the fuel line, replaced the fuel filter and replaced the spark plugs, but nothing seems to help. If you figure out what the problem is let us know.

stock intake, is it possible that his rings are gone, that would explain the power loss, he also said his MPG is poor? ill test the maf and try to find that vacuum leak and go from there. thanks for the help. when i find the problem (hopefully do) ill let u know what it is.

CLOGGED CATALYTIC CONVERTOR. mine performed the same way and one day that cat just 'blew it self out' and cleared out whatever had it clogged and it performs great now. i still need to renew my whole catback system and replace my o2 sensor...but..the cat convertor is where you should start
