Big problem, really need some help ASAP

Halfway to school today I noticed that my first and second gear seemed to not be working. I came to a red light and stopped. When the light turned green I hit the gas but the car idn't move. I floored it and it revved to abot 2-3 revs then started shaking. Then it seemed to be shifting up to I'm assuming 3rd of 4th gear and started moving very slowely. Once I got to my school I went to back into my spot, I put it in reverse and absolutely no power went to the wheels. It just sputtered at 3000 revs and didn't move. Fortunately I had enough room to turn around and park straight in. I put it in neutra and gave it gas and the engine just shook constantly. I turned off the car and popped the hood. There was oil all over my filter and what I'm assuming is the tranny which was beneath the filter. It also looked like oil sprayed out from somewhere, it also looke like some leaked from the rod that you use to check the tranny fluid level.

Its a 2000 auto SE. If anyone could help me It would be great, for now I'm kinda stuck at school and I don't know what to do.

Sorry. It's likely the trans is done. Make sure it's full, then get ready to bend over.

First things first is the "oil" that is all over, engine oil or transmission fluid? either one find location of leak fix and refill. then see what happens. My guess is its tranny fluid. You should be hoping its a line and that you didnt smoke the tranny by driving it after you first noticed something wasnt right.

The number one rule to live by when you own your own car and dont have money to fix it.

When something isnt working right stop and figure out why. continuing to drive a car that you know is shifting or running poorly can cause much more damnage and a MUCH MUCH higher repair bill.

Sorry, but I think that your transmission is toast.

I had the Exact same problem with a 2001 Auto that I bought last year. I lost 1st, 2nd and Reverse. I could drive in 3rd & 4th fine. There was no leak or anything from my transmission, but the engine shaking etc. that you described was the same.

I found that is I revved in Park & Neutral, it would sometimes creep forward, but I mean creep - Barely move an inch.

I opted for a second hand transmission from an I30 with a warranty for much cheaper than a re-build.

You should have it checked out at a transmission shop, but I can almost guarantee that it will be a re-build or replace.......

Did all of this just happen in a matter of a couple of minutes, or have you been having weird stuff happen before this occurred? A lot of times when your tranny goes out, it was "going out" for a period of time before that. Were you hearing a whine or anything before this happened? (My guess is yeah, cuz like the other cats said, it sounds like your tranny went out on you.)

Yeah I noticed whining in 1st and 2nd gears.

How long on average does it take to get fixed?

Well... you are either talking about having your tranny rebuilt (possibly) or switched out. I'm not a mechanic, but if it happened to me, I would probably figure on being without my car for a week or two... and that is assuming I have $$$ on hand to get it fixed.

Of course, it could be something else, so definitely get it checked out. Sounds kind of serious though.

If you are lucky then it is your tranny is out of fluid, because my Taurus had dat once and I actually drove straight into a gas station and got like 7 bottles of fluid and it started to work again. Anyway good luck and please dont make more threads like the hood scoop thread.

P.s. Did smoke come from under the car when you parked it?

When I started it there was a considerable amount of smoke coming from the exhuast.

you could try the lucas transmission fix, but it may not do anything, but for $5 start with every cheap fix that could work.

I know people are gonna say no to this, but aamco did my friends tranny for 400, it was just a full swap, not a maxima, but aamco tends to get it done in a day with an appointment.

wow, man. you hood-scoop really gives the tranny a lot power, it can blow your tranny smoke through the engine, then the smoke comes out form the exhaust?
get a used tranny or rebuild this one, and stop doing street races.

smoke from the exhaust.... bet you that the exhaust is burning all the oil you sprayed everywhere.

I'll agree with the general concensus that one of your lines busted, which isn't normally a horrible thing. However, your continued attempts to get it to move will almost certainly have killed the tranny. I would just swap a used one in and call it a day... oh yeah... and inspect your other lines :-) if one went maybe others will follow.
Good luck

Oh and Lucas Tranny Fix = waste of money when you're just going to spray it all over the place. If you get a used tranny I would put a quart into it though, the stuff works well.

Blown MAF keeps the car from moving forward or in reverse, and blows oil all over the engine?

Plan on 3-4 days. Much better to find a low mileage used transmission than take a chance on a rebuild. As SexyLeo about that....or me. Most shops cannot rebuild an import transmission worth a crap, or they just replace only the parts that are shot and a year later, you have to go into the transmission again to replace other stuff that has now worn out.

Im gonna go ahead and ask his next question for him. Where are the best places to get good used trannys?

1) eBay?
2) Local Junkyards
3) Web sites?

Any estimate on cost to install tranny? Or just find that guide that that one guy wrote, grab some beer and some friends and DIY? I have tranny issues and I'm tired of wondering when its gonna finally go. Only 82k miles, but still.

I would recommend local junk yard or a good well known junk yard since if you have a problem with the transmission you should have a guarantee that it works 100%. Most places may blame installation for any problems with the transmission. If you bought a transmission and had a transmission shop install it then you can say it was professionally installed. A good transmission shop should turn a Max around in a day no problem if the car was left over night and they got it in first thing in the morning. Less miles is usually better not always.

Wow, 3 posts of insults in a serious problem thread. Thanks for contributing to the forums.

They really need to put a minimum age requirement on who can own these cars

To the OP, www.car-part.com is your best option. But in order to get home from school, you might want to try adding fluid and have someone follow you home just in case. Good luck!

"Village Idiot" or not, the dude has genuine/serious problems with his car and you guys are still giving him crap about the sti/hood scoop stuff. That's just salt in the wound man, not cool at all. Save your energy for threads that actually deserve harassment...
