Exhaust idea

as a background i have a 2001 AE 5speed, and i recently purchased a V2 supercharger kit, that i am getting my car ready for.

So, ive been looking every where trying to decide on what exhaust to get.

My goal is to have a nice 2.5" mandrel bent free flowing exhaust, and for it to sound deep but as QUIET as possible

first i looked at the cheap'o ebay fart cans and i know they are all loud.

Then i considered the Megan recing exhaust, but after listening to a few clips i think its still too loud.

Then i called Cattman as i know he makes a nice exhaust, but $717 shipped for a catback is nuts!

Sooooo, today after much searching and researching i came up with this:

Inlet/Outlet Size: 2.5in./2.25in.
Body Shape: 5in.x8in. Oval
Core Size: 2.5in.
Body Length: 18in.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are other resonators that magnaflow makes, i will measure the stock unit and i will figure out the Biggest model that i can squeez in there.

Part #: 10426
Inlet: 2.5"
Outlet: 2.5"
Overall Length: 24"
Body Length: 18"
Body Type: 4" Round
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Two of these tips

Material: 100% Stainless Steel - Mirror Finish
Diameter: 3.5in.
I.D. Inlet: 2.25in

And then have a shop custom mandrel bend the pipes.

I am hoping this will run me about 400 - 450 total and hopefully be quiet enough.

Well, adding the resonators will definitely help some with the noise

I will deff post some vids.

I am currently running the Cali spec warpspeed SS Y-pipe which eliminates one pre cat but keeps the front one.

as far as the main cat i will be keeping it.

from my reading its not that restrictive and there's no point to remove it. Plus by removing the cat, this adds to the noise factor.

Im actually still contemplating on the resonator, there is another resonator that im thinking about that Magnaflow makes. its 6" oval and 18" long. so its bigger than the one above.

When i get a chance i will crawl under the car and measure if an 18" long resonator and an 18" long muffler will fit in there.

Go for a resonator definitely. The bigger the quieter. I would stick with the 4" but I like to hear my VQ.

I haven't spent any time in the turbo/SC section, but having dealt with other turbo and SC cars, if you are going FI wouldn't it better to go with a 3in exhaust?
I think it depends on the amount of boost you plan on running, but it may be something to consider.

I got it used from a member here. Stillen no longer sells them, so thats pretty much the only way to get these kits.

most of the guys in the FI section run 2.5" setups, it is more then enough for a supercharged setup that is making under 400hp.

now with a turbo thats a different story, 3" would be better.

Boosted (turbo/supercharged) engines always breathe better with a 3" or larger systems. It's kinda the norm to allow better cylinder scavenging with in turn creates better cylinder filling and relieves quite a load off the positive displacement device! The faster you can get it out...the faster you can cram it in! The 3" rule won't work well on N/A cars cause thier exhaust velocity is what pulls the intake charge in initially @ valve overlap, where as the positive displacement car is pushing the exhaust out so having the least amount of back pressure is what you want! The other deal is valve overlap with your supercharger... Are you running turbo cams or N/A cams? Supercharged/Turbocharged engines run really small valve overlap when compared to N/a engines!

Stillen ships them, upon request as far as I last checked with them, but the kit is like $6000 (way overpriced IMO)

update:

update:

I just ordered all the magnaflow components from ebay so hopefully they'll be here by this weekend so i can have it all installed.

i went with a different resonator and tips though:

Muffler: 14258
5x8 18" long

Resonator: 10436
4" round 22" long (same size as Cattman)

tips: 35131
3" round by 7" long

Mandrel bends:

so if my calculations are correct, i will have a deep sounding exhaust, and not too loud.

I am hoping to achieve a Cattman exhaust sound, but for 1/2 the price.

Here are my predicted costs:

above magnaflow items: $215
mandrel bends: $66
install: 100-140

so im hoping for $380-400 i will have a Cattman like exhaust but for much less $$$.

I will post some sound clips and vids when its done, hopefully this weekend.

You could have bought the muffler with tips already welded on for $150 you know.

I looked at those mufflers, but they only make them in 2.25" inlet and i need 2.5", plus their size is only 14" long and i got 18".

Its a universal kit, not car specific, but i looked under the car and it seems that i will have enough bends in this kit for all neccesary bends. With some cutting and welding ofcourse; but im leaving that headeche to the exhaust shop.

Have you ever considered Borla's ProXS (oval, 2.5" center inlet/dual 2.5" outlets)? These mufflers are roughly the same dimension as the Cattman's (19"), except Cattman's outlets are extremely close together to fit the rear bumper valance opening!

I had a very similar setup on my VQ35 powered QX4. Same parts, manufacturer, including the tips. Maybe my resonator or muffler was 1-2" different in one dimension or another, but it was 2.5" dia system with dual 2.25" outlets. Basically same as what you posted.

Here's my opinion of those parts, although because it was an SUV it may be different, but actually the QX4 has a very similar basic exhaust setup (Y-pipe into one pipe with single exhaust to the back of vehicle):
It was too loud at low RPM's, and dead quiet at WOT/High RPM's. Exactly the opposite of the way I like my car to sound. I prefer relatively quiet at cruising speeds, and increasingly louder as the revs climb during WOT.
Sound quality was OK, more so-so than good. I was overall unhappy with the setup. I really don't want people next to me in traffic think I am trying to rice out when I am just cruising.

So, yeah....

I think my set-up is quiet, check the soundclip thread for more information on my set-up and a soundclip or 2. Granted, I'm not boosted and a 3.5L, but the concept still applies. Use a lot of 'resonators' and mufflers, as well as the stock main muffler.

Sorry for the long time to update;

I had the 2.5 inch mandrel exhaust made at Shae, using magnaflow resonator, muffler and tips + a universal kit of mandrel bends from ebay. surprisingly the kit had every bend that was needed and the exhaust shop did not need to use any of their own piping.

This exhaust although flowed very well, was CRAZY loud, between 1600-2500 rpm it was unbeareble. It sounded really good at WOT but cruising was just not working out.

so today first thing in the morning i headed back to Shae in hopes that they still have my stock muffler. well they did so i cut that loud *** magnaflow right off and put my stock muffler back on, with my new tips.

Now its nice and quiet, but still deeper than stock.

here's some pics of the exhaust with yesterdays setup. It looks the same now but with a stock muffler.

With the stock muffler on it still sounds alot deeper than it was and actually pretty throaty at low rpms, once you go over 2600rpm you hardly hear anything. also cruising is great and I can hardly hear the exhaust.

I belive that the exhaust was this loud becuase i have headers, so its basically a streight through exhaust, and i've read before that with headers all exhausts are very loud.

my next step in this expariment is to buy a stock subaru wrx STI muffler, which i belive is 2.5" inlet. and if my calculations are correct it will flow better than the stock 5th gen muffler, and will sound a little deeper, but still quiet.

I am still looking for a decent deal on a STI muffler, as soon as i find one i will update here.

Here's some pics of the exhaust.

That Oem muffler can't be beat! The Cattman exhaust system isn't that loud! If you want to quiet things down. I found a resonator called "whisper resonator" from ZZ Performance in which our rival GM boys use to quiet thier sickly loud pushrod V6's! It's 2.5" in/out and 3" in/out, 28" overall lenght, 24" muffler body lenght, 6" round muffler body case! Cost $149.99 for some good ole T-304 SS!

Could have told you you'd hate the Magnaflow if I had seen this thread earlier. Way too damn loud, especially at cruising speed. Stock muffler or a turbo style muffler is going to sound a lot better on a V6 that most straight through designs unless you just love a loud car.

I am doing similar setup, I just bought a muffler and I'm going to have a shop custom make me the (b=pipe?) that goes from the cat to the muffler. Do you guys think I should get rid of the resonator? Would it be too loud? I don't want my car to be obnoxiously loud, but I do want my car to have a low growl cruising...and to have a loud growl at WOT.
