Spitting the gear out

I began toying with a Honda last night and my 01' SE spat out first gear after I reached redline. My car has 0 mods and the has a loud stereo...I cannot hear my engine at all. In my old 98'(pouring beer on the ground for my lost homie) I had a modded intake and could hear the engine whine and just shifted on sound, usually at 5-5.5K RPMS.
I was wondering is this a "safety" device that spits the car out of gear when you hit redline? Is it for those of us who do not pay attention to the Tach?

Odd... I thought it just cut off the fuel flow when you go too far past the red line
