Gas Mileage Sucks
My current daily driver is a 2003 Maxima, I love the car but the gas mileage sucks. It get no better than 21-22 MPG in combined highway/local driving. I owned a 2001 Maxima before this one and it got close to 30 MPG.
What kind of gas mileage are you all getting from your 02/03 Maximas?

I have a 99 Maxi and i get over 400 miles per tank, i have an intake and a tornado i made myself from a thicker gauge soda can that i put in the intake tubing. It's a V6 also and i have over 137,000 miles on the car.

Dude, this has been beaten to death like a dead horse and then sent to a glue factory, and then the glue was used in an elementary school to make a glitter drawing of posts just like this bottom line is some max's get crazy good mileage some dont, but when people post that they get over 30 mpg I call bull****, so sell your max and buy another one and keep doing that till you get one that gets good mileage. P.S. my max has fresh plugs, and 38 psi pressure in the tires and I get no more than 280 miles to the tank.

dude. really......
you are getting 30mpg on your 96?
that would mean you are getting 550 miles per tank of gas. ive pushed my max on a 100% highway trip, driving with the wind, going 65 tops with the RPMS under 2600, windows shut and ac off and i SQUEEZED 450 out of my tank.
i have brand new plugs, fuel filter, OEM knock sensor, air filter. 36-37 psi tires. plus my car only had about 45k on it....
and you still say you got 550 to a tank?
u have the corolla engine swap?

I've never driven for a full tank on the highway, but for a 300 mile round trip, yes, I can get over 30. It's incredible how much better mileage you get when you keep it under 70. The speed limits on that trip are no more than 65, so naturally, I should get good mileage. I have never replaced the plugs, nor any knock or o2 sensors. It really just comes down to each car. Like I said, there are so many different variables that can effect your gas mileage.

Yup, well keep in mind im in Cali which has the highest octane of 91 and i'm 20 years old so I dont drive like im 60 and this is 90 % city driving

yea and you wrote you got 21-22 mpg on the freeway when I drove down to san diego I got 25 mpg there and racing a g35 on the way back I got 15 mpg, but driving in the city I get 16-17 mpg because I only drive short distances and then I have to warm the car up again. But come on the posts about 30-35 mpg on the freeway maybe if your going 55 mpg with 42 psi tires in 6th gear drafting a semi downhill with a tune....maybe... and even with that i'm not gonna look at the crap of a trip computer after I reset it on the freeway because that thing lies more than the bush cabinet, only way to know what your getting is to fill it drive it fill it and calculate what you got

pretty sure that isn't true, but I suppose it may be vehicle dependent. 60 mph is generally the speed at which your car can run most efficiently. Higher speeds means the car is working harder and is generally not running as efficiently.
#29
from what ive read, the "optimal" (engine effeciancy versus wind resistance) for a V6 is ~62 mph. its around 57 for a 4banger
obviously aerodynamics of the vehicle in question play a large role

I get 19-22 city and 28-31 highway. Only get 31 if long trip, keep it at 60, and no stops between fill-ups.

wow...okay ur driving must be very boring to keep that gas mileage, i'm getting really bad mileage but i cant really complain, i'm getting 15-16 mainly on city and i need a tune up like now, seeing you guys get 20 in the city and 30 on the highway just makes me go wow. 30mpg does seem like bull****
#35
the worst ive gotten was 17 mpg... that was when i drove the car 2 miles to work and back only... tank lasted almost a month tho.
I've gotten over 450 miles to a tank on my drives from OKC to PHX... i can fill up in Albuquerque, NM and make it to Phoenix (mountainous 425 miles, 70 to 75 speed limit) and not have the gas light come on.

I get 30MPG on the freeway- but only freeway. In the city it's more like 16MPG... I average about 15-16 MPH in the city... so that probably explains the difference.
#37
I dunno but I find it hard to believe that anyone is actually getting 30 MPG with the maxima. that's 540miles to a tank...
#38
the display is usually off by 3-4mpg, so I got 30mpg on interstate doing non-stop 80mph, and 17mpg in city doing stop and go.
#39
Like others have said, I do rely on the MPG display. I don't see why people would be lying about it, but if the display is off, then that explains a lot of things. BTW, I only have 28K miles on my 2002, so that may also explain a few things.

If you're relying on the trip computer that might explain why your numbers are a bit high... If you want to do a true test divide the number of miles you can drive on a full tank by the amount of fuel you put in. You'll probably find your true mileage isn't as impressive.
