No trip computer in the 2000 I30. The calculations all done by hand.... 28-31 on the interstate.

I have made it from NJ to SC on one tank of gas (~500 miles) several times!

i keep my PSI at 39

and with about 60% hwy 40% city... i used to get 390-400 to a tank...

now my routine has changed.... i dont drive as much city.... its more like 100% suburban driving... and im getting around 22-24

i think im doing good for 126k motor... and i dont make sure its under 2k rpm or anything... i usually shift at 2.5-3k.... BUT... i keep my throttle pretty light... im only pressing it to about 20% feather touching it... and by habit i shift into neutral ALOT... if i see a red light... or a yellow... pop into neutral and coast (manual tranny)

I have to second the poster who mentioned about the 01 3.0 motor...
My 01 gle - auto just turned over 161K and combined city and highway shes around the 26 mpg mark.
On freeway alone, I have regularly seen 28-29 mpg and thats with sometime in the morning rush hour stop and go traffic.
My normal speed is between 65-70 and between 70-80 if the road is open.

In my 03 I get about 22 in the city and 30.5 on the highway in 6th gear and cruise set to 70mph.

This is what I have been getting, too. At $1.30+ a liter it adds up.

I'm in your boat. 300-320 miles per tank. I try not to speed too often.

Per tank is a misnomer, since none of you run it dry.

Averaged just over 26 mpg freeway on the way up to Kentucky, mostly in the 70-75 mph range.

I have babied the gas pedal last four days, cruise control all the way at 70mph ( except for 30min of stop and go in the morning highway traffic ). and hit 260 miles and now im on reserve. i put the trip computer on when i had 3/5 tank left.

not complaining

i get about 25 - 26 mpg on my 6 speed with 70% highway driving and 30% local. Makes sense that 2001 is just a little bit better on gas with a 3.0 motor and the 2003 with 3.5 motor.

With a lot of traffic and clogged highways and freeways, here on Oahu, Hawaii, I'm lucky to average btw 18 to 20 mpg. That sucks because of the price of gas out here is so high!

My 95 gets 31 highway and 26.8 average city. Oh, and I go about 65 mph on highway.

2000 Nissan Maxima
approx 104k miles
auto

I drive 130-140 miles per day to work (mileage depends on route taken) and am a fairly aggressive driver
the last 20 minutes in and first 20 minutes out are done in heavy city traffic (Denver) and sometimes stop-and-go
my last fill-up was after mostly highway driving with a sprinkling of some in-town trips
I got 28.3 mpg on the last tank

I recently changed my brakes and got a little better mileage (I think the pads were dragging on the rotors - caused build-up and vibration during braking)

I plan to change my plugs and service the tranny fluid soon...I'm hoping for close to 30 mpg on average

Not to brag because I didn't believe it until my ScanGaugeII said it more than once in my 2001 20th AE. I am getting an average of 39 MPG between 70 - 75 MPH with cruise control on the highway with A/C. I was too shocked to also see instances of 40 - 42MPG on the highway at times as well. Around the city, I see reading of 24MPG to 28MPG.

Did the recently installed Michelins Pilot Sport A/S (235-50-17s) at 38 psi make this possible?

Could it also be the Stillen CAI, Orthodox Racing UDP, Custom Enterprise Y-pipe (Looks like the Stillen Y-pipe), the CA to Fed Exhaust Manifold modification, hi-flow CAT and Frankencar Catback?

In retrospect, I am now not regretting I went with the 3.0 in 2001 vs. the 2002's 3.5. based on the comments above. I just I thought I'd share the above so that others might replicate the same results.

I have never gotten above 30mpg doing more than 75. I don't think any maxima could do that. Do you have auto or 5spd? It has been discussed in this thread before that a v6 is most efficient around 62-65mph. I have a 5spd AE and can get 30mpg+ doing 65, but anything above that drops the mpgs to around 26. The tires could have something to do with it, but shouldn't make that significant of a difference. The only completely accurate way to check your mpg is to divide the amount of miles you travel by the amount of gallons you put back in it when you fill up. The trip computers on the 02-03s are known to read high, so I wouldn't be surprised if your ScanGaugeII read high as well.

Mine showed 30.3 between where I got gas in Tennessee and when I filled up in Kentucky. However, doing the math, I really got around 26.5. Can't complain since most of the time I was between 72 and 75 with the cruise on. My old V6 626 with a smaller 2.5 liter engine didn't do much better-around 27.5 on average. Geared much lower though, 2500 rpm was 60 mph, where in my Maxima, I am going 72 mph at the same rpm. I will gladly take the addition 85 hp in trade for a 1 mpg penalty.

The one thing I don't really get is WHY WHY WHY isn't fifth gear made with a gear ratio such that when you're cruising on the highway at 80-85 mph it should be at right about 2000 rpm. True, no real acceleration or anything, but you should get pretty decent mileage. Staying at 4000 rpm just to keep the car moving along is totally wasteful imho...

alright.. .i just read the thread about the 500mile per tank club... and how alot of people over here got over 450 miles on the tank..

i tried everything... right PSI and good driving....

but my trip computer even says for the DTE to be around 413 miles max.... which is an optimistic number.... the tank is half full now... and it looks like im going to hit 400 miles on this tank at the most which seems like a decent number for most maximas... but how do I get that 500?

what am i doing wrong?

Crykie, I thought i was the only one wondering what's wrong with my gas mileage. I have a 03 with ( purchased with car ) 20's on ( dunno how much they weigh, i can't really find out any info about them on the internet ). I usually get around 15-17mpg. My driving is almost all city and mostly unfortunate " quick spurts ". I know that really hurts the mileage because the car isn't getting up to the proper temp ( or something like that ). Most of my trips are only 5-10 mins and these are multiple trips out of a day, so yea, i know i can't complain that much but... sheet, if i could have the trip read 300 just once when i go to fill up instead of 225-235 i'd be happy lol.

I'm prolly gonna sell my rims sometime this summer and try to get some stock 17's ( which i love more anyway ). Do some new plugs and other maint items to try and get back some mileage. I know i'm not supposed to be getting mileage like my camry but wtf ... it's like driving an SUV lol.

yea most def... the rims.... 20inches is huge and heavy...

i read somewhere that getting light weight 17s gives better mileage than stock rims...

aside from that... ur environment is a killer... the 10 min trips in the city...cant really change that.

No idea where to start. What kind of driving do you do? What condition is your car in? What size wheels do you have? When is the last time you changed your air filter and spark plugs? Too many unknown variables to know where to start.

On my trip my DTE and miles driven combined was giving me an estimated 520 mile driving range.

well... driving... im very conservative... never more than 30-40% throttle... cruising around everywhere with 10%

i shift at 2500... i never go below 1500 while cruising.... so... i only see 6th gear at 42mph ... i shift into neutral and coast to redlights...

my rims are stock 5.5 gen SE rims 17in... but my tires are... 235/45/17 falkan ziex 912

---

iv never changed the airfilter and plugs since i owned it... but i only had it for 8 months... the airfilter looked new when i got the car... and still looks fairly new... only if i split the ripple and look deep inside.. i see dirt....

the plugs.. i pulled 2 out... and saw they looked pretty new as well... but i cant tell... they were NGK laser platinums.... and the previous owner said it was changed 90k the car has 127k now

tire PSI is at 37-38 psi... i try filling them to 40psi... but it only holds that pressure for a few days... it drops down to 37... and stays there for a month or so.. then drops down a bit more... does it mean i have a small leak?

I'm not sure why anyone would pay any attention to their trip computer on these cars.

I've had mine in the 500 range, and in the 92 MPG range, so

Sounds like mine is pretty average.

All stock -
About 21 in the city, up to 28 on longer drives...

gas mileage? haha what's that? 21mpg city/highway if i get lucky (70% city) - that's with m45 18s and some wider tires

gas mileage....there is none with maxima and a lead right foot......

when i bought my max i was getting 10-12mpg for the first couple tanks.....due to a right foot problem...it would not want to let go of the gas pedal haha ....

Your motor is typically designed with an efficiency curve that maxes (excuse the pun) at about 55mph. You can google the efficiency curves for most cars. If you wanted to test your MPG at 65mph and compare it to 90mph, you would find that you are using twice as much gas.

It is not meant to be a mystery. In fact it's a very easy calculation using a simplified form of the Bernoulli equation that domonstrates the energy required to move an object at speed "V" through a fluid with density "p." Aerodynamics are redundant since they cancel each other for each car. So, the end result is a ratio of the "work" required for the change in velocity terms.

Don't be a fool. Stay in school.

The 500 miles on a tank was the same day, with no stops, from NJ to SC. You can never get that with using the same tank of gas over the week. Each cold start uses up too much fuel and reduces overall mileage!!
