5th Gen Blacked out headlights

Hey guys i need some help.
Im looking for a way to black out my headlights and fog lights.
I have a few options but dont know what to do.
1. I can buy the black lights on ebay or buy the AE headlights but this costs a decent amount.
2. I could open up the headlights and spray paint them myself
3. I could buy precut headlight tints online

What do you guys suggest, can anyone advise on where to find these options or how to do these?
Does anyone have pics of the 5gen headlights tinted or sprayed?

Thanks!

I've blacked out a few headlights for the locals.

Read Housecor's How-to for baking/opening headlights.
http://www.innerbean.com/housecor/clear_HIDs.html

Open and take out the trim/housing that you want blacked out. Mask off any areas like the reflector with masking tape.

Lightly sand with 600 grit so that the paint will stick.

You can do 2 things.

Primer
Color
Clear

Or just a black plastic krylon gloss paint will work.

Now that I use a spray gun it comes out more glossy than your normal spray can paint job. So make that 3 ways you can black out your head lights.

Let dry, and place the headlights back in the oven to re-heat the glue. Seal together with clamps and then install!

This would be the cheapest way and you'll feel more accomplished.

Best pic I've got of one set of headlights I did...matched the car well.

baking the headlights will only affect the glue?
will it melt the sprayed on paint once i put it back in the oven?

I tried the tint for my truck and had a hard time with curves. I am by no means semi-qualified to tint though

You should do the AE mod yourself IMO. Get some silicone at autozone to reseal the headlights and preven condensation though. The paint should be fine in the oven. If you really want to be safe get some caliper paint or another type of paint with high heat tolerance.

I cleared the signal and blacked em out. I'm good for the cosmetic mods. Also did MattyBlacc's headlights except he wanted the orange signal lense.

Let the paint dry and then bake it helps the paint adhere to the plastic too.

No probs with seal or condensation if done right plus looks better than having a bead of silicone.I've done headlight mod for four people blacked out 2 of those 4 and its been about a year and a half everyones lights are doing fine.

Remember to use a pan not the rack or you will melt lines into the plastic.

i have seen people do it to the 5.5gen lights but i havent seen anyone do it to the 5gen lights, is there a diff in the headlights that i should worry about as far as putting them in the oven, like difference in glass/plastic?
and what should i do for the fog lights?

if you have 5th gen it is even easier. just bake them and then rub off the chrome, no paint needed. gives a glossy black color. really easy to do. search AE Headlight Mod. as for the fogs. I bought some ebay ones. smoked...

the output isn't so great if you're using regular bulbs. it basically dims the inside housing. I'm using HID's so i guess its a decent balance between day/night looks for me anyways. hope that helps )

For matte black...I would not recommend a clear unless you use a satin clear.

Otherwise look for "satin/matte" black finish.

Krylon Plastics is pretty good, and the only matte finish in Duplicolor paint is the black sandable primer which I don't quite recommend.

well when you take off the front lens all you need to rub is the front trim. you'll need hot water and a towel. just rub in circle or whatever you want and then dry it off really well so you dont get condensation later. this will leave a glossy black finish, basically for free his is 5th gen only...5.5 needs to be painted. juuust to make sure you understood.

My detailed writeup that I did a while ago:

My headlights still looks great and I have NO condensation whatsoever.

Did mine in my '00. You do not need paint at all. just hot water/soap and some elbow grease and the chrome will come off to reveal a gloss black finish.

^^looks good man, i cleared my 2k2 headlights and one of them i actually melted the bracket that holds the ballast, RENDERING THAT HEADLIGHT usless

SO word of caution, its always a good idea to use a small DAMP hantowel on the cookie sheet or what ever you use so that it does mess with the plastic...one downside is CONDENSATION could get, which quickly evaporates when the light is taken out.....not a wet towel is necessary, just DAMP all over the towel

Just did mine, turned out awesome. Took longer than expected, and those little clips that hold the screws are weak sauce. But besides, very happy with the results.

Painting the lights are easy but you Might as well add halo's or clear signals while your at it because having to keep baking your lights can be a pain. I had to do mine around 5 times because of the epoxy seperating from the halo's. got pics on my page
