Flowmaster Exhaust

INTALLED PICTURES BELOW
So I bought a Flowmaster 40 series muffler with tips welded on already from the forum, and took it in today to get it installed. The muffler was off a Maxima SE and it won't fit my 2001 GLE because the offset is in the center and not near the edges according to the shop. The guy said there wasn't enough room to work with the pipes and if the tried to force fit it, the tips would stick out way too far. So any advice is appreciated.

FINALLY GOT IT ON...SEE BELOW POSTS

You could use that muffler still, all the guy needs to do is bend up a piece after the resonator so that the center inlet can be used.

yea...I don't have a resonator for it, but they said there wasn't much room to add any shaped piping or even shift the piping because there wasn't room. But if I do buy a resonator, I guess more work will need to be done and they could possibly bend a new piece.

Ya there has got to be room in there, I am using a center inlet magnaflow and there was plenty of room to bend the b pipe correctly for it to fit like stock.

You went to a bad shop. The shop I went to just bent up a new axleback section so it'd line up.

I sent you a PM. Maybe check yelp or ask in your regional forum for exhaust shop recommendations. The muffler is much shorter than the stock one so there is plenty of room to bend the piping. If you're getting a custom catback made it should cost about 150 and if you are just welding on the muffler, it should cost about 50. Hope this helps.

Ok, Here's a few pics and a video...Obviously, the camera doesn't do it justice. It sounds way nicer in person and when driving under 4,000 RPM. And the EVO is my buddy's and the G35 is my dad's.

I got the 40 series flowmaster too. it sounds pretty nice. The only bad part about it is that its an Automagic and you have no control over the drone sound inside the cabin since it is pretty loud in there. Ive gotten used to it though.

i keep my bose loud enough so i can rarely even hear the engine ...but i'd be okay with a drone...as long as i could hear something...i hate how quiet my exhaust is.....where did you get your set up from?

I just went to a muffler shop(here, where I live) where they had the 40 series and bought a dual tip from ebay for like $15 and they installed it. Muffler, tip, delete resonator and labor/install ran me $150. Not bad IMO.

Install a larger resonator, go to ZZ performance and click on exhaust they offer 2 resonators styles...if they can quiet down a GM 3.8 and it's obnoxious antisporty sound, it can work wonders on a VQ!

You think you want it loud! Rice and loud are the same to me... especially when the throttle response isn't nice and peppy!

trying to pick my mods carefully though, gas ($4.40 a gallon) and insurance ($2,500 a year) take up most of my paycheck from both jobs

A loud exhaust should be the last on your list if you're trying to pick your mods carefully.

well it wouldnt be just the exhaust, i'd be replacing everything up through the headers....i really want to get a new intake, but i've been told that the hp gains aren't worth the money.....i want my car to look relatively stock on the outside, but be fast enough on track days....i know its dumb to ask other people about customizing your own car, but any idea what the best perfromance upgrade is that will give me the most hp gains for my buck?

If your car is a 5 gen with a vq30dek, I would say Y pipe or y pipe and headers. Trust me, loud gets old fast. Especially when you get hassled by cops.

I've actualy grown to live with it.. had it for a year now and dont realy care. But i do believe you that it will sound much nicer with a resonator, but id rather get a whole new exhaust than just modify this when the time comes.

To the OP, id mod your car for handling and looks performance since the Max has enough umph for everyday driving, its not like you can turn it into a race car. So spend your money wisely on parts you can put to good use and make driving the Max better than it is now.
