2006 HLSD 6-Speed in an A33(B)

Well, this isn't a question, just showing everyone what I got in the mail today from Dave B...

I wasn't the first with an 04 HLSD In my Maxima, but I believe I am the first with an 06 HLSD... The main difference that I can tell from the 04 - 05 and the 06 is the 06 is one, the final year, and 2 has dual syncros for 5th and 6th (I believe those are the only 2 gears, if not all of them)....

But yea... here are some pictures...

and the lovely clutch / flywheel to go along with it

Cusco Twin Disc Carbon Clutch / Flywheel (Z33)

Heh, you'd think, wouldn't you?

5 speed swap eventually...then dreams of a 3.5. Should probably take advantage of where I work at while I'm still there, so I don't have to throw in a stock VQ35...

congrats on the tranny..I'm also in the market for a tranny for my 5.5. I looked on car-part.com and it doesn't allow me to choose a tranny for that year with a locking differential, which is weird..do all the 6th gen 6spds automatically come with hlsd?

That's where I found mine and it let me search for a locking diff.

Neer mind, that's for 04/05. It doesn't give a choice for 06.

Found out by looking at the FSM last night, it isn't 5 and 6th that have dual syncros, it is 1st, 2nd, and 3rd which makes me rather happy

The clutch / flywheel are already on the car so I am not sure on the weight (as the cusco website gives no real details on it, sorry) Here is some more information on it though

I will have everything we need aside from maybe a tool or 2 if we forget one, but as long as there is an advance auto or autozone around it shouldn't be a problem...

So, we got the clutch / flywheel / transmission and axles installed... All we have to do now is install my y-pipe, custom cat, and a few parts in the engine bay and the car will be ready to run...

Still sorta a bit nervous as I am using a clutch / flywheel that were not ment for the Maxima, but I believe everything will turn out ok... I will have an update tomorrow as that is when the last of the work is being done...

sorry but I have to ask... Is the 06 a direct swap? What I mean is did you keep stock 02 axles etc? My parts guy in Ontario told me this wouldn't work, (yes I am contacting DaveB to get a quote in the meantime) but just want to make sure there were no extra parts needed for this swap. My tranny is toast and I like the idea of the double synchros and better final drive ratio. I checked around and found same flywheel and clutch, but need confirmation on axles.

Yes, it is a direct swap, I put it in last week and the axles lined up and everything went in smooth (aside from the clutch / flywheel because something completely slipped my mind that I now understand)

I drove it a good 150 miles so far and everything fit, your parts guy is a moron who just says "no" when he has no idea rather then saying I don't know...

my 2 cents

Damn, so are the shifts any smoother, or what?? What difference, if any, do you feel?? Congrats on the swap!

Not any different then my 04 and aside from crunching on 2nd to 3rd, no real difference from the 02, just HLSD (so no torque steer) and peace of mind that I have a stronger transmission, aside from that no real difference.

How about 'cruising' RPM in top gear? Since the FD is different, and you are in a 5th gen, so I'm assuming correctly sized tires for the 5th gen, theoretically, you should be higher in RPM in any given gear.

Yes, the final drive is different, I believe the 04 - 06 are 4.1 FD and the 02 - 03 are 3.81... don't quote me on those, but simply put yes, you lose about 200 RPM...

This is an example and probably not accurately describing our setup but lets say...

you are in 4th gear at 50 MPH at 4500 RPM on the 02 - 03 transmission, you will be at 4700 RPM at 50 MPH in the 04 - 06 transmission.

Weird!! You would think they would make it better. Not worse. I guess no "crunching" going into 3rd gear is a big thing. I hate when that happens.

You might have misunderstood what I said, or the way I wrote it, but there is no more crunching from 2nd to 3rd (which the 02 - 03 transmissions were prone for)

The A34 uses a higher tire & wheel profile, so that makes up for that.

I understood that. I was speaking in reference to the rpm range. NMexmax straightened that out for me though. Thanx.
