Help-New Maxima problem

Hi! First let me say-GREAT sight-I just bought a 2001 Maxima program car-Love the car-Had a BMW 325 and sold it for the Maxima. Love the Maxima-But have a problem-Test drove the car everything was fine-feel in love with it. then bought it the next day (last Thursday) as I was driving home I notice when I slowed down and was going up hill it wanted to "surge" forward. It jerked every second until I got going again. Well Friday driving it to work it did not do it so I thought it was me not being use to the car. Then on the way home it did it again. My husband drove it Sat. and it did it with him. We drove it Sunday (yesterday) about 25 miles and it did not do it until we were on the way home again. I drove it this morning back to the dealer to have them look at it and it did not do it. Service just called and said they could not get it to do it. When it does it, it feels like a jerking motion like the car is trying to surge forward. I read the post about the "slip" problem and it sounds similiar but I am not sure if that is it. I described it to my husband as a "slip" but he says it doesn't feel like a slip. I love the car but will not keep it if I can't get this resolved. Help! Thanks

I was about to say the same thing.

I doubt if that's the slipping problem, if i'm not mistaken slipping would feel more like the engine revving a few hundred rpm's before you notice that it's shifting to the next gear. And in most cases, at least from what i experienced it feels more like a jerk (my head gets thrown forward) than a surge (head slams to the seat).

Sorry, I am not good at trying to describe the problem. It jerks forward every second. It feels like the car is trying to pull forward then backs off, pull forward, then back off. At first I thought it was me not having my foot on the gas well enough. It does this until I get the car going again above 60 mph I do not have this problem. It does not do it all the time but if it ever starts once it does it the whole trip. Thanks for your input.

accelerator

make sure you gradually press down on the gas pedal so that it can properly shift to the next gear.. with an auto tranny, you will feel these slight "jerking" motions during gear shifts.. but if it's REAL "jerky" then there might be a problem.

Okay, lemme see if i got this right this time.

From a stop you press on the gas, it moves forward, then just when it's about to shift to second you feel a jerk (e.g. stops moving forward) then a while later it starts moving forward again.

Is that how it feels?

I don't know if it's a characteristic of automatics but mine seems to do that as well, but it's hardly noticeable. The only time it's very prominent is when the engine/transmission is cold.

Since yours is too noticeable to let go then there definitely is a problem. I can't say where though, i'm not very technical compared to the rest of the Max enthusiasts here.

One silly question though, this happened to a friend once so it *may* apply to you. (no offense and no flames please). Do you have your handbrake on?

Re: accelerator

Hey, i've got a question. Would a VB upgrade help solve that problem? Or at least not make it so noticeable?

You know, those BMW transmissions are smooth...she's probably having a tough time with the transition to our automagic

In all seriousness, take it to the dealer and tell him to get in the car with you and then when it happens, exclaim wildly that it just did it again.

No offense taken...I checked. Brake was not on, cruise was off, and I did not have on high heels. Service tech just called. They have driven it four times today and said the can not get it to duplicate the problem...Oh Well.....

Don't let those bozos pull one on ya! If you feel you have a legitimate problem, then go down there, tell them to get into the car with you and you show them what you're talking about. You're probably not used to Nissan service coming off a Bimmer

You've obviously pi$$ed off Der Fuerer by dumping the BMW for a rice burner.

Seriously, at your first trans. service (one year) have the technician put in LubeGuard along with the new fluid. My tranny shifts smoother than when new and it was pretty smooth then. This stuff is not snake oil and will prolong the life of the tranny.

I second that. Used it (Lubegard red bottle) in my wife's Villager tranny and I was impressed. Took care of 1st-2nd gear hard shifts and smoothed up its overall performance.
