VTC Sprockets

So I seem to have the tapping upon "cold" start-ups. The TSB for this is a VTC sprocket, which there are two.
How do you determine which is which, which one the problem one is. And how difficult is this to change??

IIRC, it's the last sentence in that tsb, basically neither are the problem one, it's completely normal and don't worry about it, pressure drains down from the system and will continue to do so even with brand new ones.

So it says a little noise is normal from the new one. But its certainly louder and more annoying than it was when i got the car.
But I shouldn't worry?? Its a lack of pressure upon startup you say, and not lack of oil to the top end?

10. After confirming the mating marks are aligned, tighten the camshaft
sprocket mounting bolts.
I Secure the camshaft hexagonal portion using a spanner to
tighten mounting bolts.

Considering you actually thought the FSM would suggest attaching anything to the cam lobe (if that's even possible) I don't know if I'd be making jokes if I were you.

well here is a question that i dont think has been asked...what oil filter are you using if it not a OEM nissan one then i would get one of those first. second, if you give it some gas say to 2k RPM's does the noise come back? if so then it may not be your VTC's but rather your guides. ive seen this happen at least a dozen times on cars that were not taken car of (oil changes). the guide where the tensioner is consists of two peices, a plastic cover for the where the chain rides (to keep it quiet while running) and a metal backing to add support. if the oil is not changed frequently enough the oil may not get to the tensioner fast enough causing the chain to slap and sound alot like VTC's. if it does it this enough the plastic guide can break the tip off of itself that holds it to the metal backing and it will slide down. this is bad because the plastic part in question also has a large hump in it that the oil tensioner pushes against to increase the tension. when the plastic cove slides down the hump moves away from the tensioner and it lowers the ability of the tensioner to do its job properly.

Its not an OEM filter... FRAM I do believe. What advantage does an OEM NISAAN oil filter provide other than a higher cost?
And it the noise I get around 2000rpm is the common valve tapping, more noticeable under a load.

That's what I was thinking.. a checkvalve? So does anyone know of any other brands off the top of their head, other than OEM, that would also have the checkvalve??

You might have missed my post where I said it's not a "very Small amount of noise" and its noticeably louder than previously.. or not at all when I bought the car.

Makes it easier to torque the cam sprocket and retainers in when you have something to hold onto....this design is definitely better than the VG30E cam holding provision!

It was informative.. but I didn't feel that it directly applied to my problem that im experiencing, i say that because my VTC sprockets AREN'T new and it was a little more than a small noise.
All in All, those things are expensive and extensive to replace. The car is still running so I'll have to take it 1 day at a time.

And I did the oil change yesterday w/ Mobil1 filter so I'll keep ya informed anything new or not new.

Check you tensioners, them maybe bleeding down, allowing more slack in the timing chain, therefore creating noise. There should be a dimension as to how long the plungers should be under pressure and I know for sure there are 2 access ports/panels on the timing cover!

timing chain tensioners are non adjustable....meaning they are not able to be adjusted like a timing belt tensioner on alot of cars, they adjust themselves via oil pressure..why dont you get a "video" of the noise in question along with a sustained 2k no load condition, followed by a series of idle to 1500k revs. with this information we might be able to point you in the right direction..NOTE: please make sure the engine is cold when you do this and repeat the same test once engine is up to operating temp.
