Hit a cow

After buying my maxima 7.5 years ago I had my first wreck in it. Hit a dark colored baby calf in the middle of my lane at night. Was doing about 55 when I hit it and never saw it. I didn't know what I had hit. I heard a big thud, both airbags deployed (burnt my hand), and then another thud on the windshield. Luckily it rolled off. Smashed the hood in, bent my A/C condensor and radiator in bad and broke the windshield. Total estimate at my body shop was $4100. Anyway, don't get too comfortable driving at night. Watch out for dark things in the road!

holy hell, you don't hear that too often! Glad you're alright, and are they going to fix the car, or is it totaled?

Sorry to hear about your accident.

I was driving home one night and there was a heavy fog in places especially low areas. I went down and around a hill and curve and just as I hit the bottom of the hill to start back up there was a very large deer standing in the middle of the other lane.

I mean all of a sudden here is this deer and it scared the crap out of me. If it had gotten startled and moved I would have probably been dead. Because this was a very large buck.

So I make sure I slow down when it's foggy like that especially during hunting season when they are on the move out of the hunting areas.

I can't afford not to have it fixed. The kicker is I had just cancelled my collision insurance 18 days before it happened. I was trying to beat the odds by just going with liability and I lost. Had I thought about it a little more I would now realize that 2001 parts still cost as much as they did in 2001.

It's been long ago paid for - another reason I cancelled insurance. Still put a damper on my weekend. You're right, I'm glad no one was hurt. I was by myself, and was wearing my seat belt, but the car didn't slow down much at all. When the hood smashed it, it broke the latch and it flew up so I couldn't see anything - I veered a little into the oncoming lane, fortunately nothing was coming. I hit the brakes to get the speed down enough that the hood came back down. The way those airbags smelled, I thought the car was about to erupt in flames. That gas smells foul!

What was a fat chick doing in the middle of the road?

Glad to hear you are okay, could have turned out a lot worse if there was oncoming traffic.

Glad you're alright, though. I still have full coverage on my Max. Maybe in 2-3 years I'll drop it, but fixing anything these days just isn't cheap.

That's weird...I was driving home one night around 2am on a country road by my house, right next to a farm. I barely saw something standing in the middle of my lane...I didn't see it until I was about 20 feet away from it, luckily I had my high beams on. Guess what it was? A dark black calf (cow). I slammed my brakes and beeped my horn at it until it ran off the road...it looked like somehow it got through an electric fence and couldn't find it's way back in. I ended up calling 911 and reporting it to the police...I'm sure they don't get too many calls about cows being in the middle of the road at 2am. But anyways...I was very close to having a very similar story to you!

Whoa whoa whoa! Hold on a minute there...............

So you hit a cow.... That was in the middle of the road.......

And you don't have insurance to cover it and have to pay out of pocket?

I would think the farmer is liable, I'm sure there is local laws regarding containing your cows. You just need to find out who's cow it was. Seriously bro', $4k? Get some legal advice and start doing some detective work. Get a police report if you still can also. And pics of the dead cow, for this thread and your case.

Subscribing for pics of the cow.

I hit an armadillo on my road bike. Tweaked my handlebars. Those little suckers blend in with the concrete at dusk. Even worse, they make no attempt to avoid anything coming towards them. However, if startled, they will jump straight up in the air.

Honestly...that sucks.

But, did you even have your lights on? Were you in a corner? I know the calf was dark in color....but how can you not see a calf in the road? Maybe at 55MPH you were driving too fast for your headlights.....

My Cousin hit a 1500 pound Bull in his Turbo AWD Eclipse…..
He kept his Eyes Open when he hit it so he could keep the Car in the Road.
Glass and Bull-Crap made it into his Eyes and made it so he could Not see for about 17 days….. Man that Car Smelled Real Bad.......

He talked to a Lawyer. The Lawyer told him that The Cows Always Win in Court….

Glad to here that the accident was Minor.

Hitting stuff is no fun last month I hit a deer in my accord on the highway. too much traffic could not get out of my lane could only slow down. It was going back and forth between lanes. I was lucky I saw it in time and slowed to about 30 before i hit it. Ran over its rear legs and its front legs and head when over my hood and windshield. Luckily it only cracked my turn signal. Deer wasn't so lucky. running over its legs under heavy braking not good. was limping around on its front legs. Called Highway patrol came out and shot it. Sorry buddy.

Oh god. I hated that last story. Same thing happened to me. I hit a stray dog and didn't kill it. Had to wait for someone to come along and give it some mercy.

I bet he had a bad case of pink eye once he could see again. J/k.

Sorry about your car. Accidents always suck no matter the damage. Hope everything works out for you.

I guess I really lucked out a few months ago when I hit a driveshaft out on the interstate late one night. Busted a hole in the wheel and wasted the tire but otherwise no harm, no foul. No blood to clean up either.

Ouch!
Plenty of Deer on our roads here in Ontario, but never heard of a cow wandering onto the streets.

Regardless, good you're ok. And $4100 sounds pretty reasonable when compared to the damage you described.

Remember to watch your language.

The calf didn't suffer long. I didn't get any pics of it, but here are a few shots of the car.

Oh and that's manure all over the car...it stank.
