maybe the sound is unable to be heard in the car but able to be heard while having something to reflect the sound like walls and cars.

Any know what would cause this type of noise in respect to this situation?

That's gonna be nearly impossible. You're gonna have to give more details and try to pinpoint where it's coming from better.

yea its an echo off of the conrcete barriers your driving next to...hopefully not a trans issue. When you jack the car up(if your on stands and not just a jack, and feel safe doing so) chock the back wheels, start the car and turn the wheel slowly side to side and listen. then free-run the car up to around 30 mph and see if you hear anything

why don't you record it and put it up here instead of guessing around.

Hey gotendbz1, I have a 00 Maxima with the same problem. You can ONLY hear the noise under ... 15mph with the same scenario driving on road side, or down a one lane street. The sound can be described as "clink" and for me it was coming from the passenger side.
The ONLY way to hear it is to turn off the radio and drive less then 15mph.

could it be engine pinging?

Now i read that if you have engine pinging you can hear it if your windows are closed and radio is off, is this true?

If i have windows closed i can't hear the noise at all.

I had a similar issue which turned out to be the struts having worn down dramatically. Would only hear the sound while driving next to something (echo affect) and sounded like clanking typically in a situation causing the struts to contract.

did your problem occur only under load or did you hear it when your cruising off the throtle?

Look to see if the strut leaking around the piston and perform the bounce test! If the front of the car doesn't settle after you release it change the struts!

I have the same problem with my 03 6 speed. I first noticed it after driving the car for about 4 months and only when it echoed back to me. I thought it was coming from the engine or exhaust. The dealer didn't find anything nor did my regular mechanic, so I just live with it. I did notice that it was not as loud after I changed to the right viscosity oil, I was using 20w50 when I lived in KS now I use what the manual recommends. I haven't noticed any other problems and the car still drives great.

I think you're not to sure whether it's suspension, engine, or etc.... While driving see if it is throttle related, or bump/rebound related, or brake related...please narrow it down then let us know.....thank you & good luck!

i can only hear it between 1800-2200 rpm and it doesnt matter it the road is smoth as sleek or if it is bumpy. also it only happens under load, it i get in neutral and rev to those rpm no noise.

stilll havign the noise, i have narrow it down to the front driver side area, took it a shop and they couldn't find where it was comign from

it makes a rattle/clicking kinda sound. it usually happens after driving for liek 5-10 mins, happens during accel under load , usually i have to be next to something to really hear it. once i get above 25 i dont get the sound or i just cant hear it from all the wind noise.

any suggestion, i really wanna get this taken care of before the winter.

I do know when the engine is under load (ie: fast accelerate), the throttle in the intake manifold kicks in will make a click noise.

I'd say, check your tires.

I hate noise issues. This could be anything from:
rocks in the tire treads
loose splash gaurds, heatsheilds
bad motor mount.- I say this because my chrysler had 2 bad mount mounts, and on acceleration the motor would twist enough to make th cv joint on the passenger side click.

To help locate the sound have someone ride with you and have them open the passenger door while you drive at slowly down a smooth road/ parking lot. Listen if its coming from the front or rear. Then do the same with them at the rear d/s door. It sounds crazy, but it'll help you generally locate the source.

DISCAIMER: Not responsible if your friend falls out and you run him over.

Heat shield rattling.....I have the same time thing, but havent had a chance to get under there and start tapping things. If anyone knows which shield it is, could you let me know? It would definitely save me some time. Thanks.
