Let a relative barrow the car, now i got a blown clutch. Need Help!

Hey Everyone, yeah im not to happy about now. Great uncle came into town not wanting to rent a car and asked to borrow my dads AE (Used to me mine, still love it). He boasted about how he knows how to drive a 5 speed, he's a MAN. Well apparently he doesnt. The day he brought the car back he joked to my pops that "oh i didnt realize it was a 5 speed until earlier today." So he was driving for about 400 miles, lots of highway, with 4 gears. The kicker is that when he left he never mentioned to us that he BLEW THE CLUTCH. We took it to the dealer and they want $1200 for a new clutch.

Couple of question. Sorry, i dont know much about Engine, Tranny, Clutch stuff and i have been out of the 5 Gen loop for a bit.

1. Can i get a better clutch aftermarket and save a chunk of change for my father?

2. Now i didnt speak to the dealer so i dont know if that is including anything else that was damaged. They spoke to my father but does $1200 sound about right for a replacement Nissan clutch for an 01 AE?

Thanks to everyone.

1200 is indeed the price for a new clutch at the dealer. There are plenty of threads on alternative methods.

for that price you can get a better quailty clutch/flywheel combo and have it installed by someone other than the dealer....search around before you spend your hard earned dollars

Thanks for the confirmation.

Another question, Sorry if its a no brainer for some. I tried to google it quickly and didnt really come up with a direct answer.

If the clutch needs to be replaced does the flywheel also need to be replaced? Is it a "if you do one your have to do the other" and thats why its so expensive or is it just expensive because it is expensive?

Again i used to be more into the audio part of things. Im used to "you cant just do 2 speakers you got to rip them all out."

Thanks again.

You need to have the flywheel machined no doubt, average machine shop price for that is $50

The flywheel needs to be flat. It can be machined. Otherwsie you can get clutch chatter.
