Saying goodbye to the 5th gen...

Well, it's with much regret that I am saying goodbye to my trusty 2000 Max. Made the decision last night that it was time for something new after 6 years and had my heart set on a bit of a sleeper that will be great for autocross, track days, and snow days (which the maxima was too!).

I've put alot of work into the Max and made it into the first car I can truly call "mine" so it's sad to see it go...I still think it is WAY sexier looking than the new car, and hopefully one of the local org'ers will buy it so I can still see it at meets, lol..

Anyhow....I'll still be around the org plenty and will still be happy to lend my advice to anyone who wants it (and to those who don't!), but here's to 6 years of good times with the Max, where I did every mod I ever wanted to do with it, and will definitely miss it when it sells...

If anyone wants to see the new ride, it's in the "Other Cars" section, but here's my tribute to my max....

hopefully you'll still be around! the new car looks sick, and figures you'd keep the black out themed. hopefully you put as much heart into it as you did your max.

Yeah, it will stay stock for a while. I want to take a year and pay it off (and finish up the GT6 and do some house "mods"), so the only thing it might get is a Redline shift/ebrake boot and a cargo net for the moment, lol.

I'll still be around here, since I know maximas and I know JACK about Subarus. Gotta start the long process of learning all over again, lol.

The tint on the sides is Formula One metallic (whatever their "best" one is called). It's actually pretty light (50%) to be legal here in VA, but from certain angles in the sun it has that nice green reflectivity due to the high metal content. It's the same tint as in all the other pics!

Here's a crappy pic of the new car. Didn't get home until evening, so haven't taken any decent pics of it. I don't think it's terribly great-looking, but I'll be inside it, not outside

stock exhaust is BEEFY and sounds identical to an STI....

this is a terrible angle that makes it look "fat"......

The front lip of this is pretty low. The mach1 would be dragging on the ground. I believe the STI guys do the "garage door seal" lip, which is not as thick...

So there is plenty of Homo Depot mods you can do...

So whats the reported gas mileage like?

EPA says 18/26...so it'll probably be about the same as or a bit better than my Maxima (which gets a solid 21mpg in mixed driving).

Probably has alot to do with me staying off the pedal on the right

Although being a newbie, I have benefited a lot from the org and especially so from your input, Irish. Really love the way your car looks. I have a similar car and I'm working towards making it look as good and sexy as yours. Good luck and lots of success with your new car.
Thanks for all your help.

Sorry to see the max go. You did a great job with it. What Suby forum are you going to reside in? you say your new car doesnt look very hot, but i'm sure you'll figure out a way to make it look hot somehow.

thanx for the pics and I'm not really digging the looks of it but who cares AWD+turbo boxer= mad fun and sexy sounds. I too innoovw with how subies sound especially with HKS exhaust... My next car will either be a wrx, wrx sti or a evo... So I'm saving money now...

Keep us posted with your mods to the subie.

Subaru's sounds horrible! But 1 advantage is it will be better and more fun in the snow if you're a snow driving enthusiast as I am! And the maxima's are no good for that!

yep it's an 09. Dealer didn't even know it was on the lot until I pointed it out to the salesman, lol. AFAIK it's the first 09 sedan sold in the state and I got it for invoice

nope, trying to sell it as whole. Especially since I don't have most of my stock parts anyhow. We'll see what happens, I'd love to see someone buy it complete so I don't have to take apart all that hard work

I'll be in NASIOC probably, since I know several people there (including a few other org'ers). It's gonna stay pretty much stock for a year or two until I pay it off. Might do a few very minor things (tint, debadge, shift/ebrake boots) but no engine/suspension stuff for a good while.

I was never a big fan of the boxer engine sound either, and I still don't love it. But I'm sure I'll get used to it and it will grow on me. The fact that it will smoke any stock maxima makes up for the sound

The hatch is so 17 year old's car. I'm 32. I wanted a car that didn't attract attention from people or police, and I prefer sedans to hatchbacks anyhow. Plus the sedan is structurally stiffer, and costs a bit less.

Expect around 18-19 down to 14 if you're not staying off. At least that's what it was for my friend's 2k2 WRX manual. I'm getting around your number with my Max auto. Oh, and tickets were killing him to the point he had to sell the car. You don't feel speed in it as it is not very low and AWD acceleration doesn't help either - no spin, so you get over real smooth . You're going to have a lot of fun, congrats! Once he took out Viper off the line, for 3 sec . The guy was with chick and kind of bullied on the road but had not so good tires and RWD only. You should've seen his face when this thing took him off the line! He caught us up by his 3rd I guess and flew by literally as he finally got the traction ). I thought he was going to burn his tires to the wheels until it finally downed on him to ease up a bit.

I'll still be around here, just not with the max

Oddly, I've already had like 5 people on the NASIOC forums (Subaru) who know me from here...other ex-maxima owners.

Not that trip computers are very accurate, but so far the first 1/2 tank I'm averaging 27mpg in mixed driving Will do the manual math when I fill up to see what the real mileage is.

btw right now I'm keeping it under 4k rpm while I break in the car, so that probably explains the good mileage.

Yeah, but in this area you can only go as fast as the traffic...and there's ALWAYS traffic. I managed just one ticket in 5-6 years with the maxima, and I don't drive slow. I just drive with traffic and stay low-key.

That's another thing about the 09 sedan WRX...MUCH more low-key looking than the older body styles like your buddy's. Mine just looks like a Honda or Kia or something, lol....not a rally tuner rice burner!

yeah...street racing and drag racing aren't really much interest to me. Actually I think street racing is stupid as hell. I'll keep my racing to the autocross course and the road course track

I don't know displacement of 2k9 but for his 2k2 it was 2.0L IIRC. It felt so unless he spun the turbo a little then it did have a performance but mileage - as I already said. OTOH what's a point to have a turbo and not use it ? In any event, it took him a while to get used to the car's behaviour - until the point you wouldn't tell the difference from a passenger seat .

the 09 is a 2.5 with the STI turbo in a different trim....EPA ratings (using the new more accurate method) are 18 city/25 or 26 hwy...

QFT. There are parts of the WRX that are not as good as the Max, but overall the car is MUCH more enjoyable to drive and is faster/handles better than my maxima did even with all the mods on it!

Hell, I still miss my '92 Accord coupe and '87 Integra sometimes. They were so small, light, and tossable compared to heavy modern cars with all the safety features and stuff!

well, watched it drive away about 10 minutes ago.

If anything, I'm sure I'll see it around the org since member Stillen Maxima (Albert) bought it to go with his s/c'd 4th gen. Albert, now you can hang out in the "cool" 5th gen forum
