cali spec y pipe removal problem/question
Tried to remove my stock y pipe in order to install my new warpspeed pipe and everything went pretty smoothly until i got to the bolts where the y connects to the rear headers.
I have a 2000 cali spec and even after i remove all the heat shields i can only get to one of the three bolts where i can get some torque on it.
I was wondering how those of you have gotten your cali spec y pipes off. I was going to hit it with my sawzall but when i went to grab it i remembered i loaned to to my dad so the removal/install has to wait to tomorrow.
I would much prefer to take the stock pipe off in one piece and donate it to a member that needs a stock replacement but at this point it looks like it is coming off in several pieces unless someone has a suggestion.

I have the same thing as you... 2000 Cali spec with WarpSpeed y.
The shop I took it to didn't take them long to take everything off. Are you not able to reach the bolts because of weird angle or...?

there are three on there and i can get to one. The one i can get to i am using a 12" extension to reach and an impact wrench at the end. the other two i cant get to in a strait line because of the way the pipe bends and the precat. the only way i could reach them is with a short socket which would give me limited torque.
The bolts aren't way rusted but they are probably taking about 120-150 ft/lbs to break them free and 60-80 to turn them and i dont think i can do pull it off with limited space and only a few fingers on the wrench

would you be able to get to it with a u-joint extension?

if so, you can get them at any auto parts store. and don't worry, they're not anywhere near as expensive as the snapon one in that link. I just wanted you to see what im talking about.

picked up a swivel joint and hit it hard with the impact wrench and they came off! Thanks for the suggestion.
I sheared off one of my bolts on the front manifold but that is ok because the broken part is stuck in the old pipe and i stripped one of the rusted cat bolts but i solved that problem by welding on an old 13mm socket on there and going at it with the impact wrench again.
After i got everything on and took it out it sounded like **** because it was hitting the brace back by the b pipe when i got on the gas hard. It didn't seem to be doing anything of purpose so i took it off. Should i shim it down a little lower or should i just leave it off? what is it's purpose?
