Does anyone have a close up photo of their chrome window trim that they 'blacked out' with the molding tape by Trimbrite!?!

I can't get mine to look very good.
The part that's bothering me is by the mirror when it turns a lot

Any help or pics are appreciated!

 

Ahh yea I've been wanting to do that too.

 

no pics sorry.. but u cant use the same piece,.. you have to stretch it in as far as you can,..and cut it and then overlay another piece to make the turn,.. then another piece for the straight part again,... i think thats how i did it back in the day,..came out clean..

 

I did one window and was displeased with the turn, but satisfied overall.
I'll go back and cut it up and do the rest of the windows


I prepped surface w/clean wash and then rubbing alcohol...
it's stuck great so far (prob 2 weeks since I did the window)

 

any other useful techniques?

 

Well I just got done doing mine. I didnt use trimbrite since i couldnt find it but I found some electrical tape and decided to do it with that. It was pretty easy. I kept the vynal on the roll and used one long peice for each side of the car.

The only technique I used was stretching the tape and slowly applied it around the bends. the bends came out great. You cant even tell that it's electrical tape or vynal. Anyways heres some before and after pics.

That I'm not sure of. I got the idea of electrical tape of the BMW Forums. A lot of those guys are blacking out there trim to. Most of them said it holds up great. The only issue is the resedue left over from the electrical tape. Some goo gone should take car of that though. I may end up using some actual trimbrite it only took about an hour to do both sides but we'll see how it holds up. I dude said he had it on his car for about 2 years. I dont know if electrical tape will hold strong that good here in florida though. Lol I guess time will tell.

 

I'd be concerned with the electrical tape curling back due to sun exposure. Especially where its pulled tight, thats just the nature of the tape.

How about trying to heat up the Trimbrite tape with a heatgun or hair dryer to make it conform to the bent at the mirror?
I thought about removing the trim from the door on my Max and painting it. Never got around to it, but it doesnt look that difficult.

Love Trimbrite. You need to make a relief cut at the bend.. Try to have the overlap occur on the bottom of the mirror where it is less visible.

 

When I put it on I made sure that I didnt stretch the tape where I was going to end the strip of it. I really only stretched the bends. I also used one peice so the ends of the tape are on the inside of the doors. Your right though even though the end are not pulled and still end inside of the doors it could peel back. I did make sure though that the tape I used was good quality vynal electrical tape. It's suppose to be weather resistant as well. I guess I'll find out if the Electrical tape works over the next few days. If it starts peeling off or whatever I'll be sure to update you all.

I had though about painting them as well but I was worried about over time it chipping. If the tape messes up I can atleast re-tape it with minimal effort. If it chips or whatever I'd have to re-paint. Plus with the tape its not perminant. Since I was undedided I went with the tape 1st.

 

The right way to do it would be to pull the trim off the car, scuff it with a 3m pad and spray it flat black. The tape is going to do some weird stuff when the summer sun hits it.

 

You could also have the trim anodized black. That ought to hold up really well. Not all that expensive either, should be under $100 and will look very professional.

 

The tape shrinks about 1/8" in the summer, not at all a big deal if you cut the tape out a bit more than you need. Electrical tape will look hideous considering it will react to oil marks from your fingers and weathering... along with it's sticking ability... very "gooey" compared to trimbrite.

 

Ehh I dont know... I do like it but I'm not 100% on it right now if I'm gonna keep it like that. I wanted to more so mock it up today than just spray them and I really dont want to spend more than $20 bucks on it. Trimbrite is just under $6.00 Shipped in 2 days so I'm just gonna buy some of it for now. If I decide to roll perm with it I have a spray gun and just I guess I'll just spray it flat black or maybe a Gunmetal kinda like my rims.

 

if you want something that will stretch or become pliable with heat then get some vinyl.

I used trimbrite on mine and it came out fantastic. Just take your time w/ applying and triming. With the corners just use multiple strips.

I did this to my altima a few summers back, with the TrimBrite. I did it when it was warm out and the sun was out, it made things warmer and allowed the tape to stretch. But I only had one bend and then did a whole nother piece for the straight horizontal part. It has held up great over the years except where I left too much, and it has dried and got brittle. Im going to redo it. Where I took my time and did it right, it still looks great. Did the grill too.

Yeah, I don't know If I'll do my Max. Its blue and the windows aren't tinted, and I don't think I will, so I kinda like the chrome. The blacked out looks 1000X better on the wife's altima.

I just need to spray my tails red like her's and all will be good.

 

The blacked out is gonna look 23904783x better on my max...
It's Gold/Tan (sunlit sand) and I'm gonna spray the headlights black along with 00-01 Tails and some more stuff..... Giving it all black accents tho.
