FPR or Fuel Pump?? Help

Hey all, it's been a while since I have last posted on here! Hope every org member is doing good! Been so busy with work and my wife now drives my 2k1 Max AE. Anyway, I will get to the point! I know I know....., I have searched the forums on this as well but the threads I have read were fairly older threads and I just wanted to know if any one has any new tricks or suggestions!

Heres the scenario as of 11/1/08:

2K1 Maxima AE 109,000 miles, NGK platinum plugs replaced at 90,000 miles (approx. a little over a year ago). Hard starting issue lately only upon first start only, with rpms dropping (feels like car wants to die) after first 2 seconds of vehicle turning over, feels like a fuel problem, it takes about 2 to 3 seconds of cranking to turn over. Got code p1320 p0305 which I new was ignition coil # 5 (wife felt a misfire maybe once in a week's time, but I have not noticed any misfire but changed IC 5 anyway). So after replacing ignition coil #5, cleared code, no other codes stored in ECU. Still hard starting only upon first start, but after the first start, it starts up right away with no rpm drop, but if you let it sit 20 min or more it has the hard start with rpm drop again. I am hoping this is a just a fuel pressure regulator problem versus a fuel pump problem. Also I noticed the exhaust fumes are pretty awful, smells lean/rich. I have tried the Seafoam in the tank too, no luck! No other codes as far as 02 sensors that would let me know if in fact it is too lean or rich. I have used BP premium fuel since mile number 1 on the vehicle. If any one can help or if any one knows any tests I can perform on the FPR , I would greatly appreciate it. I'm hoping it's just the FPR as that seems more easy and less expensive to replace than the fuel pump.

Thanks in advance

Joe

Ok all, I know I haven't got any responses on this thread but I figured I would try to update you guys on the situation a bit incase anyone runs into this same problem! Well I keep getting dtc p1320 (random misfire), a local mechanic has been trying to diagnose the problem correctly. Tested all ignition coils and they are fine and within spec, spark plugs good (have spark), fuel pressure tested and all within spec, tested crankshaft positioning sensors (both have voltage and good), cleaned MAF. Come to find out technician did some research online on a few nissan / maxima forums and some tsb websites. They found that it may be the ECCS harness as a damaged wire may be the cause of this code. Tech went back to vehicle and wiggled ECCS harness and now everything is fine with starting the vehicle, cranks right up. They recommend I drive it around for a few days to see if it acts up with cranking starting issues and if so bring it back in so they can repair the damaged wire. Has anyone ever had to go through this and if so is it something I can repair myself since it just sounds like splicing and repatching wires? Or should I bring it to my local nissan dealer and get with their high prices but at least they may be familiar with how to get this issue resolved quickly and correctly? The local shop I have been using is very honest and is not even charging for any diagnostic fees and they have been working on diagnosing the problem for 2 days now. Any input orgers?

If it were me I'd bring it to the shop that did the diagnosis and have them complete the repair. Nothing to lose.
