what the hell? crazy dash

Ive searched high and low and have only come up with infinity g35 having this problem. what do you guys think?

i started my car this morning to warm up, no issue. came back about 5 mins later and my dash was lit up like lucky charms and the magical rainbow. my gas said i was on E, and my gas light was on (i filled up yesterday so i wasnt low). my temp gauge said it was on H (high) so i had a warning light on for that. check engine was on, trip odometer was "blank", however i could read the total mileage on my car.

I turned it off thinking whats going on? started it back up, no issues. everything was back to normal except my trip odometer said "8888888" . this afternoon when i left work, everything was back to normal including my trip OD. halfway home i noticed my total regular OD said "2". (yes, 2 total miles) and within a minute it was back to normal and no problems.

overall car ran fine, no hesitation, no more lights, nothing. is this something i should be crapping my pants? i just had nissan put in a water pump, and a starter last week. havent had anything close to this since. didnt know if it was something as simple as maybe a blown fuse concerning the gauges? bad battery connection when they disconnected it, or something far worse. i already checked the battery and connection is clean and tight. havent got around to the fuses yet.

thanks for any input

Check your fuses, maybe reconnect battery. If all fails take it back to the dealer and be like WTF. Take pictures of what it is doing and give it to them. My .02 but I havent heard or seen anything like this. GL

it's not a fuse because fuse's don't FIX themselfs. if it was it would have blown and continue to do the same thing...you know?.

to me it sounds like a component on a board is failing or some moisture got in there.

g'luck hopefully it doesn't happen again...personally i would just keep an eye on it as i doubt a nissan stealership will have much to say on the matter. but then again a quick call can't hurt...

Your alternator might be going bad if you are getting all kinds of weird electrical problems on your dash. If it only happened once I wouldn't worry about it, but if it keeps happening you may want to get that checked...

My old Lexus had the same thing happen once. I took it to a dealer for their input and they suggested I replace the alternator. Could have been just a fluke, but I put in a new alternator, and it never happend again.

Electronics have 2 settings - on and off. There is no in between. If your alternator is going bad, there's a good possibility your dash and other electronics aren't getting all the power they need to function correctly - similar to plugging in a tv or stereo into a socket with a dimmer switch attached to it I guess.

shouldnt i be getting other symptoms if the alternator was going bad? other electrical issues? radio? lights? etc. car runs strong, just this weird thing. i just have put a pretty penny into the car, so im debating keeping it bc of that or dumping it and getting an updated 07+. the only bad thing i have going is if i get rid of it, the dash cant be read right now bc of the mileage is screwed up bc of the odometer reading being screwy

ive done some research online. is it true when you install a water pump, that the alternator belts need to be removed? i cant find anything direct with our maximas, but there are articles that mention when installing a water pump, they do "touch" the alternator. im wondering if maybe its possible they knocked out a wire? connector etc? its strange that al of a sudden now im having this problem after they just installed the WP.

I guess it would depend on the mechanic who installed your water pump. I have no idea if the alternator needs to be removed or not, but because it is easy to remove and reinstall, he may have taken it out to get easier access to the water pump. Might not be a bad idea to call the place that worked on your car and ask if they had to remove it or not.

yea, it was the dealer so they will have to figure it out. its just too coincidental i have never had a problem, then all that work is done now the dash issue.

been researching this all day and night. ......

could it be possible that coolant/oil was spilled into the altenator when the water pump was being replaced? this would cause a short, therefore causing my problems.....just found something about when the WP is replaced, significant amount of coolant can be spilled. what do you guys think?

if your cluster was bad once it went south,it would have stayed that way
most likely a key switch that jolted your system only once!
did it every do it agian?

just picked it up from the dealer. like i said, they did the electrical diagnosis and it was the circuit board. it was doing it every start up. nothing on the speedometer or gas gauge etc etc. $450 later its now fixed. they also had to send the microchip out to program the mileage per federal law.

o well, after a call into nissan usa, they are suppose to call me monday after they talk to the dealership. i gave them the sob story of how i am disappointed im a life long nissan owner and they couldnt help me out a little bit more.

to be continued......

yours sounds like a blown fuse. the fact you are having problems with you window, AND, lighting. it could also be electrical. check all the fuses first then youll have to do an electrical check if its not that.

thanks

my window problem was because i needed a new master switch... bought that and installed it and now my windows are problem free.

My mistake was foolishly trying to install an 02 master switch in an 00... the 02 has both front windows as AUTO and i believe i screwed something up there because when i plugged it in the dash lights reversed.. as in when the headlights were on the dash lights were off... and when the headlights were off the dash lights were on.. when i unplugged the 02 switch after realizing my f*** up the dash lights remained off whether the headlights were on or off

i really screwed up here.. any ideas would be great

thanks
