SES Light "P1456 -Manufacturer Control Auxiliary emission controls"

Hey guys,

After an hour of researching, I decided to make a thread. Please do not flame, I searched all over google/nicoclub/here, all the other "related" posts were from back in 2006-07, and they were getting the same number for the code, but different reason.

In the older posts, people were getting the code "P1456 - EVAP Emission Control System Very Small Leak (Positive Pressure Check)"

Ran the OBD-II Scanner, my code is exactly "P1456 - Manufacturer Control Auxiliary emission controls"

Just bought this car less than 3 weeks ago from a great member here, Burnurass. Max is absolutely GREAT. Totally in love with it, no regrets whatsoever. Drove it back from NJ to VA and ran into no problems.

2 days later I got a check engine light. I was low on gas, and assumed it was related to that. Ran the scanner, and realized it wasn't. Cleared the code, read someone's post where they put gun oil on the gas cap to ensure a nice fit, this didn't help.

After clearing the code, it reappears after about 150-200 miles of driving. Note, I always fill the gas up completely when low so the only interaction I have between myself and the gas cap is after a full tank (350-400miles). It's come up about 3 times now since I've had the car.

Was wondering if anyone had ran into this problem before, or any ideas on what may be causing it. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

BTW - Car is a 2003 Nissan Maxima SE

That's what I thought could be causing the issue, hence applying the lubricant on the gas cap between fill ups.

I guess I could go to nissan tomorrow and buy a replacement, but I though I read it's around $80.

I just fixed my P1456 code from my 2002 Maxima.

On a regular OBD Scanner you will get that "P1456 - Manufacturer Control Auxiliary emission controls" but if you look at it through Nissans FSM it is known as "P1456 - EVAP Emission Control System Very Small Leak (Positive Pressure Check)"

I had this come on and off since 2003 and it finally just didnt go off in time for the emissions test here in illinois and I had to have it fixed. My SES light would turn on and off with this code pretty much what it looked like to me everyother time I pumped gas into it, I always thought it was the gas cap so that was the first thing I changed and when it didnt go away i had the EVAP system checked. Turned out I had one of the hoses connected to the EVAP canister leaking.

First off, I want to say Thanks for the reply.

I ordered a new gas cap today, found out it was only about $11 with my dealer discount. Might not fix it, but for only 11 bucks it's worth a shot.

Secondly, how did you have the EVAP system checked, and if you don't mind me asking, how much did it cost?

Thanks again.
