I guess it could be done without removing the center console. The lady that had this Max before me must've spilled McDonald's down there one too many times, because my center console was filthy.

Reason #2 is because of the way we installed our iPod/iPhone cord. In the first picture below, that hole has been Dremeled through the main center console box, so that the cord can be stowed in there, out of the way. Nissan obviously saw this coming, as evidenced by the grooves they molded into the plastic (see the second picture). This allows the console box to close without crimping the cord, which would be undoubtedly bad over time.

Works like a champ and sounds GREAT! Oddly the packaging says that it wont work with an iPod touch in hybrid mode, but tried it anyway and works fine with my 1st Gen 16GB touch. I will take some pics/video tomorrow to show it off if anyone is interested.

Thanks for the writeup evalyn! Without it, I would have never known of this product solution.

If it work's with the iPod touch, I'm pretty sure it will work the original V1 iPhone...But has anyone tried to see if this works with the 3G iPhone? The USB pins differ from 1st gen to 3G iPhone, and am curious to know if anyone has verified if it works or not.

Thanks.

It doesn't charge the iPhone3G with the included cable, but there is another cable USA Spec sells (i think its the USA Spec CBP-85) that does work for the iPhone3G. I ordered both and hope to get them next week!

Just to let the curious know... I have a 2002 6-speed with no Bose and no CD changer and the USA Spec works perfectly. The plugs in the back of the stock head unit are positioned slightly differently than the ones shown in the write-up, but the four that are needed are there.

With the 6-speed I didn't have to remove the console, just the vent, ash tray with trim, shifter boot with trim, and the head unit. Very easy to do. Took about an hour and half start to finish. Can't wait to not have tons of CDs hanging all over the place.

Amitch,

I can second that, I just tested my IPOD interface in my sister's 5.5 gen and it worked. Plug and Play...like yours, my sister's car is also non-bose and no CD changer. I'll post pics later this week (for those interested)

Has anyone sucessfully hooked up a 3g iphone to an aftermarket headunit (one that does not have an oem kit available) ? Also without using an FM transmitter.

I have an older Panasonic headunit http://www2.panasonic.com/consumer-e...del.CQ-DFX983U

For the charging problem that iphone users have seen, I read in a post in an apple forum that said 3g iphones simply need 5V rather than 12V in ipods and the 1G iphone. The post stated that resistors could be used to bring the power down to 5V and 3G iphones could be charged.

Nice, like the way the controls from the steeering wheel can be used. i dont have those options on my car

I have an aftermarket HU installed. So in the empty din i made a hole and fed a plug that goes into the inputs aux for my HU. the cable i ran was an iPlug. i used double sided sticky tape and it wont move. i use a .8th to .8th inch male to use with my iphone. i use a iphone charger to charge my phone, the draw back of my setup is i get feedback when charging my phone..... but i like it.

Installed this today in less than a half hour (thanks OP for the great directions).
I paid $20 for the cable to charge the iPhone3G as the included cable won't do it.

Working real well so far. The only annoying thing is the message about the accessory not being designed for the iPhone and suggesting to turn on Airplane mode. Only a minor bother, but I wish I could disable that.

UPDATE: I get some engine whine noticeable at higher RPMs... Wondering if anyone else has noticed? Could be my iPhone (turning on Airplane mode doesnt help) or maybe the cable I am using?

I just ordered it today for my A33 max.... can't wait to rip open my center console and see what nasty stuff is beneath it. FYI... http://enfigcarstereo.com/shopsite_s..._PA11_NIS.html the dude from ENFIG just called me back to let me know that its 3G iphone compatible... you don't need to buy the $20 cable... comes with the kit. 100 bones isn't bad at all for this kit.

I too have a whine at higher RPMs. I called Crutchfield and they suggested to turn down the volume on the ipod, this didn't work. I was given the number for the manufacturer but haven't called yet. Crutchfield said adding a noise filter is not something they would advise, curious what USA spec will say. Need to find that number.

I sometimes get a whine with mine, but it is only intermittent. It goes away after awhile. The volume control on the iPod will be disabled when using the docking connector, therefore only the radio will control the volume.

Turning down the volume on the ipod didn't make sense to me either but I figured I would share what Crutchfield said.

I have just developed problems with my USA Spec adapter. When I turn my car off, my factury HU will reset itself. All of my radio radio presets are deleted and set to default. This problem only occurs when I have the unit set to AM/FM and I turn off the car. I have developed a fix, but it requires unplugging and reconnecting all of the wires on the back of the unit.
Any suggestions? Heard of this before? Possibly a grounding issue?

I haven't had that problem, but sometimes my ipod says "ok to disconnect" and won't play. I plan to mention this to USA spec if I ever call.

I'm sorry it has taken me so long to get around to these questions. Here are some answers.

It's not your phone, it's the USA Spec module. I called and talked (read: complained) to a tech at USA Spec, and they shipped me a noise filter and install directions for free. *Note, they say they don't do this for free, but if you explain your dissatisfaction with the product, they're pretty reasonable.*

There is a cable that works, and a cable that doesn't. Specify that you have an iPhone 3G, and they'll hook you up.

NEVER. I'm sorry, bro. That sucks, and it sure hasn't happened to me, or I'd be on the phone with tech support stat!

Great writeup!
Very detailed and clear pictures.

I bought the PA11-NIS last year, and got side tracked after the birth of my child.
Will be doing this very soon.

I also purchased a cradle which I will install to the right of the radio

They do not appear to support control of the Zune using the factory controls, however, you could just use the aux that it has built in to get the audio into the system.

I have a 02 Maxima with Bose and the 6cd Changer in the front. I've read that you cant have an IPOD adapter with this, but is there ANY way for me to add an IPOD adapater even if I connect through the headphone jack. I am willing to disconnect my cd player totally and I mainly just use my IPOD for music.... or will I have to buy a new H/U?

Thanks for the help!

FITMENT

Hi, I've been reading over maxima.org for a few years now but I've decided to register today and provide some input on exactly what 5th Maxima's this ipod adapter will and wont fit:

All 2000 Maximas
All 2001 Maximas
Only 2002 Maximas with the single cd player without the bose logo.
Only 2003 Maximas with the single cd player without the bose logo.
Only 2002 Maximas with the OEM Navigation System.
Only 2003 Maximas with the OEM Navigation System.

robmack, You'll have to change the head unit. It basically fits all Maximas except for the 2002-2003 Units equipped with a Bose indash 6CD changer. All previous Maximas allowed owners to add a cd changer through the cd changer port except obviously your car. If you want to keep it OEM there may be a workaround for the 5.5 Gen Max. You may be able to put a head unit from a 00-01 Maxima and use the cd changer port that way. But I once tried to put a Bose unit from an 00/01 Maxima to an 02/03 Maxima and the head unit was not compatible. I don't recall whether the volume was uncontrollable or their was no output but this was for 2 different 02/03 Maximas that I tried to install the 00/01 head unit to.

Or you can go aftermarket which will kill the OEM-niss.

So what will this application give me with the phone? I have the 03 no Bose or cd changer. Can I jutst do a customizable interface with a spin dock for the phone? I'm also reading the controls on the steering wheel will work, does that mean the module has to be connected to the radio And iPhone to control the features from the wheel, or connect the module to the wheel and just iPhone?

There is so good info here and I'm just trying to picture what everyone is saying and how the functions work with the non Bose. Essentially I can maybe do this for my gf and her 06 TL.

Thanks all

Thanks for the confirmation. I was afraid this might be the only option. I wanted to keep it OEM, but having an IPod connection is a biggy for me and I dont know if I want to do the cassette thing. I might just get an aftermarket H/U I guess...

Any recomendations on one thats not super expensive and that I'll be able to plug my IPOD into and use steering wheel controls with?
