Saved by the ABS? [Extremely Lengthy]

I was driving home in the max last night on a Two lane (each way) fwy. As I was driving at a painfully slow 60 MPH in a 55 MPH zone I noticed this late model chevy truck in the right lane kept pulling up to me and then slowing down over and over agian. I didn't want to race cos that fwy is notorious for WSP Volvos, so I kept it cool. Plus I didn't really see a point in racing it( dont they have top speed fixed around 85-100MPH?) but at one point when it actually pulled all the way up to my hood I noticed the altezza lights and huge exhaust pipes a graphic of a guy ****ing on the word "Nissan" I decieded that I would take him when I see its safer (meaning not too many cars oncoming or in front of us) I waited till we were on the bridge, his lane was clear but there was a newer pointiac grand crap am about ten car lengths ahead of me, the truck was about half way. I stepped on it and the truck sees me speeding up and speeds up too. I actually heard his exhaust!!! by the time I got up to the grand crap I was head to head with the truck. I had to change lanes and get behind to truck to pass the grand crap to continue racing so I slowed a little and noticed another car that had merged into the right lane so couldnt switch lanes, As I sped up again to try to get between the truck and the merging car the grand crap in front of me just slammed on the brakes hard !!!!! there was no one in front of it! I was coming in fast I slammed on the brakes but didnt really believe I would make it without hitting the grand crap cos it had basically stopped still! I just slammed it hardest I could and got ready for impact. I didn't hear any tire lockup, the car stopped barely an inch from the grand crap. Man was I glad! But at the same time ****ed off at the grand crap. He started slowly driving again, The truck and the other car behind it were long gone so I pulled up alongside the Grand Crap and looked at the driver, a middle aged moron looks at me and then takes off, I was totally ****ed off at this point and just stomped the accellerator all the way, I took off passed the grand crap, pulled in front of him, fingered him, kept accellerating caught up to the truck passed it, now I dont know what you guyz say the top speed on the auto max is but my speedo was reading well over 120 (more like over 125) before I let go. I slowed down to about 75 at this point the limit was 70. The truck came flying down and tried to pass me but I sped up and then I saw the grand crap passing the truck and coming up behind me, I sped up again and went well over 110! slowed down again and the grand crap tries again so I "hand" signalled him to pass me and slowed down till he was dead even, his tail was almost at my hood when I sped up again and passed him, the he gave up and I had had enough so I lost him in my rear view mirror and took the next exit, pulled into a walmart parking lot and calmed down! I have decieded not to EVER let that happen again, never trust the driver in front of you! NEVER race until I have a clear path in front of me! and most important Never bother racing with losers! just keep the cool!

I am just glad I didnt rear end him at that speed! Thank god for ABS, thank god I wasnt in my Accord! (LX: Disc Front crappy Drums Rear, Not a chance)

Cheapest I've seen is $1600.

BTW, I'm glad you and your car got out of that situation unharmed.

Because you were doing something were not supposed to. But damn that idiot grand am driver was taking his life into his hands w/ that stupid move!

Just feel extremely lucky, burn it into your long term memory and refer to it the next time.

Taking the race part out of the story...

I hate it when other drivers do crap like that. I think they might be trying to "teach you a lesson," but one hell of a dangerous lesson. I've had cars do that in very non-aggressive situations where they are, evidently, just not happy with the way you are driving. So, for that lesson, they put you, themselves, and others at risk by braking or cutting you off, etc. Somehow, their moral high ground allows them to believe they are doing the world a favor by behaving in such a dangerous fashion.

The Grand Damn idiot was taking more than his own life in his hands with that maneuver. Whatever your stance on racing, hitting your brakes in front of someone while they are accelerating for a race is a bad choice.

Yes you two are completely right. Up here in the NW area, there are many self proclaimed "speed enforcers ie.. 60mph in the left lane", "braking for no reason" etc.. and self promoted "traffic cops"... There should be an old beat-up volvo lane w/ a max mph of about 50mph on the freeway just for them. Oh yeah.. it's the carpool lane.

ABS saved me too

Racing a POS TL down a service road both trying to make it to the same tight clover leaf exit. I start off in back of him, get into trusty 3rd and smoke him. Get to the cloverleaf in 5th around 4500 RPM, slam the brake, ABS kicks, yank the steering over and she goes 'round the corner. I am still trying to figure out how I made it through! The car smelt like cooked brakes for half an hour!

ABS rocks! But you have to trust it not to lock up.

The rule to use ABS properly is:

STOMP - on the brakes

STAY - on the brakes

STEER - the car

Amen to that brother. Having grown up in a car, driving around Washington D.C., New York City, and Boston I can certainly say that we Northeastern folks are agressive as hell on the road but we know what danger is. Now that I live in the great Pacific Northwest, I have found that they may drive slow as molasses in January, but they sure do know how to cause a good, solid accident.

Man your story sounds exactly what happened to me. I was going 125 and trying to beat my top speed of 143 when this fool with 2 girls in his car decides to switch over to my lane for no reason. I came within centimeters of his bumper with my leg fully pressed on the brakes. My friend that I was with told me later that he thought that we would defiantley hit this guy and cannot believe we were able to slow down. I follow this guy to his exit and jumped out of my car. I was about to grab him by the neck! All he could say was "I'm sorry!" "I'm so sorry!!" The girls looked pretty shook themselves so I just cursed him out and got back in my car. I'm 28 now and I'm glad that I calmed down. The last thing I need is the po-po coming around and locking me up. This fool wasnt worth it.

How things change as you get older. Back in the day Fuggetaboudit!

While, you should know better than race in traffic, the only thing you should feel guilty about it not pushing that jacka$$'s car off the road. People like that are usually the ones causing accidents.

Thats a prob... but I hate when I'm just cruisin in the carpool lane and someone thinks it's the turbo express lane. I normally cruise at 65-70 and I'll get people riding my ****. Just cause its all the way to the left, doesn't mean it's the 90 mph tailgaiting lane.

If you drive safely at the speed limit...then everything will be better...not driving 130 in the left lane or 110 in the right...if you drive normally most of this stories won't even happen...i am not saying i am driving at the speed limit(never) always like 8mph above it...but still i try not to get that crazy of passing it by 50mph+ you risk everybody around you and espically you

hmmm

kinda lost me on the race part. But, yeah.. glad they didnt need a spatula to get you off the rear window of the grand am.

Not to say stuff like that has never happened to me, but I usually get really pi$$ed off at myself, not the other drivers - I assume they are all morons and will do the least intelligent when you least expect them to. I would be embarrased that idiot got me to do something that I totally knew better (as you did with police and traffic). But thats just me.

I know here is not NY, we drive in Toronto . You know what I'm doing mostly on the road? - trying to figure out which lane that f**ing lady turning right on the red light would choose. I'm good at that, but one time they've really got me - the turning car took left lane first on the two-lane road in each direction - usual way . Then, she thought about something and went into the right - happens from time to time, they still remember their driving instructors, then she came back to the left - THAT never happened before! I was lucky and had enough space to slow down but it was something - one car literally blocked the road. I think, police should give tickets for that too since it causes pretty bad accidents. My point is that although speed limit is important but it's only part of the story.

Here around the SF Bayarea the posted speed limit on the freeways is 65. If I was quickly coming up behind someone cruising at 65-70mph in the fast lane and the car didn't speed up or move outta my way, I'd be ****ed. Cruise at whatever speed you like in the other lanes, but when you're in the fast lane and some one wants to pass, you really should move outta the way.

I agree with CalSonicSE, when there isn't any traffic, the carpool is meant for going 80 If you can go 65 in any other lane, why do it in the carpool lane?!?

well im glad your ok.

has this only happened to me or does it happen to you too?
your speeding on a hwy, cutting in and out of traffic, when one car in front of you see's, they dont stay in there lane and let you cut them off on the right or left, but they get scared and change lanes into the one your going to cut and speed into! this happened to me twice, thank god for all my suspension mods or else i wouldnt be able to cut back into my lane.

and this one time going 70mph on a highway, there was construction or has been there for a while, this is at night, and im following a camry, then a newer model camry pulls out of the construction lane thats closed to traffic, the camry infront slams on breaks, i slam on my breaks know i wont make it so make a hard *** turn around the camry's doing 65.

I have had stuff like this happened to me, think all of us have and it's tough for me to stay cool on the road. My cousin has had this happend to him. Some idiot in an Alero did this and stayed in the middle of two lanes to prevent him from speeding up. I was scared and held on for dear life. Finally he was able to pass him and got in front of him and slammed on his brakes. He spend up and gave him the finger. Wasn't a good move by my cousin but then again i wasn't driving. I can't comprehend why anyone would just slam on the brakes. Whenever anyone is on my a@@ I don't slow down or slam on the brakes. If they want to get by me they can pass me, simple as that, it's in the DMV booklet. I am one mean a-hole when someone gets me mad. I had a beemer almost hit me and a big rig. He cut me off, so he wouldn't hit the truck and talk about a close shave. Man that got me so ticked off that I accelarated to catch him and followed every lane change he mad. He stoped and i stoped and he drove again and i followed and he pulled over and I did the same. His interior light came on and saw him reaching over for something, looked like from his glove box and i looked for a licence plate number but he had none (plates) I just took off slowly to see if he followed but I guess he didn't. I honestly wanted him to follow, but that was just plain stupid, i should have let him go and wished evil things upon him but i had to be a dumb a$$ and follow him. For all i know he could have been pulling out a gun to shoot me. Since then I have decided to let things go cause there are people waiting for you at homw that would like to see you again. I often wonder why it is that road rage exist and my theory is that is roads and highways aren't big enough for all those cars. Hope everyone learns something from each others experiences and drives a little more aware. Thanks to all those that have shared there stories cause it reminds me about what I need to remember.

Slamming on the brakes just to irritate someone is not very wise. People have done this to me many times, thinking they will scare me. Well, they usually manage to **** me off. I would say always expect that to happen, just to be on the safe side.

If I am in the front, crusing (at or over the speed limit, but not racing), and some punk tries to ride my rear bumper, I just smoke 'em

That's the thing... the far left lane is the carpool lane (24x7) in WA. The fast lane is actually one right of it.

Oh yeah... the speed limit on this stretch is 60mph too...

And then there's the brilliant Civil Engineer who put the HOV-3 car pool lane on 520 between 405 and the bridge on the RIGHT SIDE OF THE ROAD so that all the merging traffic has to cross over the car pool lane.

I knew there was a reason we were all making fun of the CE's when I was in school.

Well I do understand the cp lane is not really the fast lane but I do wonder why people get over there just to go slower or the same speed as the rest of the traffic. Doesn't quite make sense.

Hey when driving in the rain, do you guys pass the people in the left on the right then cut back in to give those lane blockers a good spray of dirty road water.

Kinda seems like they are just driving really slow in the left lane to avoid getting sprayed.

I like the CP lane due to the reduced merging in it. I figger the fewer lane changes the less chance of someone running into me. like I said I do typically 65-70 in it which normally passes most traffic. If I'm passing traffic they can't complain.

I'm not trying to be an butthead I just don't think I should be forced to speed just to ride in the carpool lane. Not to mention I typically end up going around most people in the cp lane too (on the right no less).

There are some people who actually want you to rear-end them. They can claim a debilitating neck injury and sue you. They may never have to work again if they do a good enough acting job. I may be wrong (I'm not a lawyer) but I believe that regardless of circumstances the person who hits a car in front of them is ALWAYS considered at fault.

heh..

it will never happen here.. but in Germany a man was faulted for slamming on his brakes to miss a dog. He caused a horrible accident and the judge ruled that emergency stops were only allowed if bodily injury was immenent. in this case, hitting the dog would not have endangered the driver so he was faulted for the accident and his insurance had to pay (I think this also set the benchmark for cases and basically made it the rule of law there). The pending case is that motorcycle riders are trying to get an exemption because hitting an animal will likely cause injury to a cyclist.

I will swerve/brake to save my front cap AND the dog.. screw those freaks that were following too close in the first place!!

couple of things. first is that if i see someone riding too close to me i just take my foot off the gas, it makes them do 1 of 3 things. they slow down and get off your butt, they pass you, or they high beam you(which dont do a damn thing with an auto dimming mirror) secondly, if the critter is small enough to go under your car, hit the sucker. if it is roaming a buisy road it probably needs to be put out anyways. otherwise skill has to come into play and avoidance is key. third, as for the fast lane thing I always thought that it was common road rules that if you were in the "fast" lane you drove with your brights on to let the people in front know you are comming and in a hurry and road courtesy would kick in and they would move over. Even a flash or 2 should be enough to "ask" someone to move over. kindof like flashing oncoming traffic to alert them to a speed trap or something important...

Personally, I consider all lanes the fast lane. But then again that wouldn't be the fast lane(singular) anymore.

Punkdork.

CP lane as fast lane. Well I do but I understand that it's not.

Left lane. It is the fast/passing lane and I do get peeved if someone is farting around not passing someone.

If someone behind me wants to get by then I DO move over. What the hell let him run interference right?

Slowing down in the left lane when someone wants to get by is uncool. Just ****ing that person and the 10 people behind him who want to speed up the pace also. I don't really understand why people do that.

The european way of signalling is 1 or 2 quick flashes. But in the NW, only about 1/2 know it. Some get ****ed and think you are the jerk. They don't understand how 90% of the other world drives.

I agree i drove in Italy and in Argentina and in both countries people fly through the left lane and a quick flash of lights is a nice way of saying move.
