Automatic Adjustmenting Seats

Hey I been trying to setup the automatic adjustment seats in my mom's car. I followed the instructions provided in the user's manual. However whenever I try to setup the function it never works. The lights come one as they should, but after I believe I have successfully programmed the seats they never move or anything like that. Is there something I may be missing or not doing correctly. I am following directions word for word.

Are you sure that the switch to the left of the steering wheel is set to auto and not cancel?

I believe to set it, you hold down the set button until the lights come on, then hold down the preset number you want (1 or 2) for a few seconds, let go and I think the lights turn off. Now, if you have it set to auto, it should make your seat go back when you take out the key and then return when you put it back in.
