Projector Headlights
Projector Headlights
Hey i am looking to put hid projectors in my 2000 maxima se, and i have been looking for a while and just had a few questions. I noticed there is non-hid projectors how are those differerent from hid projectors other than they are non-hid? Also does anybody know where i could buy some good hid projector that are reliable?
Just to warn you, you're probably going to get flamed left and right from other users, as this is a commonly discussed topic. Don't be surprised if you see the word "Search" a lot in the upcoming posts. But I'm pretty much a noob myself so I'll try to help you out.
You're probably referring to the Ebay halogen projectors. They are different from HID projectors in that they use H3 bulbs, like those found in your foglights, as opposed to HID D2S bulbs. The optics in these particular headlights are very poor, and thus exhibit inferior light quality.
You can however use an aftermarket HID kit using rebased D2S bulbs (H3) that will fit into these projectors. I initially went this route, as I own a 2000 Maxima and hated the stock ones. The light ouput is no where as close as OEM projectors, but it's pretty good considering the price and you get the projector "color flicker". Here's a pic of the Ebay projectors with 8000K HID's:

If you want better optics you can retrofit the H3 projectors with better ones, such as the MDX ones to get very attractive light output.
I suggest replacing your stock 2000 headlights with OEM 02-03 ones, which contain a HID D2R system (refelective housing not projector). That's what I'm replacing my Ebay ones with and you can't go wrong with OEM. Plus you can always retrofit TSX projectors in those, if you still desire them. Hope this helps.
Edit: You can also retrofit a bi-xenon projector in your stock 2000 housings to maintain high beam functionality.
