Questions about GAB
Ok I have a strong feeling that im going to get flammed for this but ive been searching for the past hour and I cant find the answers to my questions. Also a few links brought me to wrong threads...looked upp the hanger one and it came up with a thread about someone being robbed at gunpoint...
anyway.. I was thinking about doing the hanger gab mod. I was wondering
1) how safe is this to use...is their risk of damaging my maf?
2) what do you do with the airbox? do you remove the back piece and keep it off or do you replace it?
other then that info from searches has helped...thanks guys

There is always the risk of blowing your MAF, regardless of whether you are stock, have a GAB, or any aftermarket intake. These cars have weak MAFs period and it is luck of the draw pretty much. I have the "weaker" MAF, not the AM600, that came with some 2002s and I am still on the original one that the car came with after 70,000 miles. This is after going through a Berk intake, GAB, custom, Stillen intake, and now back to GAB. If you're worried about blowing a MAF, either don't touch your intake or get a 2001 2Y001 MAF, which is about $90, as a spare. For how to use a 2001 MAF on a 2002/2003, check the Stickies.

I did the GAB (drilled holes in the holder) and OSCAI, plus added a K&N drop in filter. No MAF problems and it is a year later. I do regularly clean my MAF wth CRC's MAF Sensor Cleaner.
Like puppetmaster, as far as I know I am on the original MAF and my '02 has a June '01 build date and I definitely don't have the AM600-my car has 144,750 miles on it.

Drilled holes the diameter of a quarter into each of the squares in the top part. I think I have like 6-8 holes (not sure). Have a K&N drop in as well. You're safe with the MAF. Litterally best bank for the buck mod you can do. I've had zero drawbacks thus far. Have had it for about a year.
seems like most drilled the holes as opposed to the coat hanger trick. does anyone have any feedback on how the coar hanger gab holds up? that one seems to be the easiest to do.
I personally havent done either....but IMO the drilled method would be easier, and it looks a hell of a lot cleaner than the hanger.
Go to hardware store, buy the size bit you want, go home, and drill holes.
And dont forget to vacuum out and shavings that get in the air box.
Just my opinion.

Drilling = what some of us called the PAB or ported airbox
Anyway, that's good advice, to vacuum out all the crap. Sloppymax and some others used 3" desk grommets to fill the drilled holes as well.
Another idea for the GAB, and this is what I did, is to buy a spare stock airbox for cheap (I know most people sell it for like $30-$40) and saw off part of the lid piece. It will still clamp shut tight, but will have a permanent opening in front of the filter.

Nice intake growl without being obnoxiously loud. Really sounds good after the VIAS switchover. I really didn't notice much in the way of gains until close to 5000 rpm, which is where the ECU starts richening up the fuel mixture (wouldn't want the Maxima to have the same horsepower as a G35 now, would we?
) and the added airflow seems to help lean it back out and pull harder to redline. Not huge OMG gains but you can tell the engine is more eager to pull to redline.
Best $0 I've spent on any car I've own.

I did it with the coat hanger, had it for about a year with no problems. I decided I didn't want to drill holes in the holder, since its 60$ to replace, if I ever needed to for some reason. As long as you bend the hanger per the instructions it holds just fine. I check it whenever I have my hood up and its never been loose or anything. As far as power, I can't really say, I'm sure the butt dyno feels something, but that's just because you want it to. But there is definitely a change in sound.

There's a sublte growl after 3k, but I'd say a good majority of the people do NOT do this for the sound...
I just used a dremel and made sure to smooth the edges with a fine grit sand paper to ensure no pieces of plastic were flying into the filter.

How is the low end loss of the ported holes? I did the OSCAI and felt I lost a good amount of low end power, now with a un-altered intake scoop I have awesome low and mid range power. However top end as expected sucks and no where near as nice as when I had my Frankencar + Apex'i. If this ported hole mod does not loose too much AND gains up top then it could possibly be the best intake

But maybe I need to give a short ram or popcharger another shot.

I did the coathanger-just three weeks ago. used the thickest gauge hanger in the house. It holds very well-have not had an issue yet. Checked it about a half dozen times so far (was nervous right after i did it)-sits nice and tight. A little vaseline on the edges helps with the seal (and i do mean a little).
Sound is nice over 3k right up till redline and it pulls hard.

okay this is a dumb question but how do I take off the filter? whenever I have it changed I do it with my friend who isnt feeling well today and I really feel like getting this done. I saw the clips and I remember him undoing them but I dont remember how he got the thing out.
just made the gab, and it is awesome, the sound is great and the engine revs faster at around 4000-6600. It was hard to feel the difference performance wise because of rain. I really liked it also took a video of it, ill post it up soon\
Thanks guys for the idea!
