Shifter cut and weld

That's pretty much it...I'm going to cut 1-2" off the flag pole we call a shifter and weld it at the new height.

Its been done before, I dunno why you would want to though. The stock shifter is in a good spot, you don't have to reach down from the steering wheel too far.

I want to because I think it'll look better. I guess I could also argue that there would be a slight performance gain, but that's a bit of a stretch. As far as the reaching for the shifter, it would actually be closer to the center point through all the gears...right now, I reach when I throw to 5th.

yeah, i like the free STS idea. I never knew about it, I may still cut and weld because I hate the look of the 'flag pole.' That way it'll be practical and aesthetically pleasing. Thanks for sharing!

There's no "free STS" mod for 5-speeds.

huh, I just figured he had a 6 speed, why not just buy a STS for it then. They have them for the 5gens dont they.

IMO, it's more trouble that it is worth... that's probably also why so few people have done it.

Maybe he just wants a shorter shifter without the shorter throw.

Like I said before, I hate the stock shifter height. So easy to cut and weld, so I figured I would try it. You could argue that I am being cheap, but you could also argue that spending money on a STS kit for a FWD 'grocery-getter' is pretty stupid also. Too bad there is no "free STS" for my year, thanks for being on top of things Nismology.

For the sake of pointless discussion, to me it seems to be a relatively pointless and possibly harmful mod. I would think if you wanted to fix the flagpole problem with a worthwhile fix, just buy a STS - it'll solve the long shift AND the look. But that's just IMHO. It's your car, do what you like to it!

Sounds good to me. Should be no problem cutting the 5-speed shifter down. There's no reverse lockout to worry about like on the 6-speed.

I don't know why you would want to weld on it though. The best thing would be to cut it down and have a machine shop cut new threads on it for the shift ****.

There's nothing wrong with doing it for looks. You're not damaging anything or making it unsafe. It sure beats slowing the car down with a heavy set of oversized wheels or sticking a bunch of spoilers and fins all over it.

I've done it but haven't installed. It isn't really that hard if you are a good welder. But if you want to keep the reverse lockout, the hard part is trying to find an adhesive for the plastic lockout sleeve.

Still in the works eh? I used weldo on number 3 I think for the plastic. Still works. Haven't had any problems with mine going on 2 years.

When i bought the car the guy told me "oh it has a short throw shifter blah blah blah", well when i went to change out the head unit when i took the boot apart guess what i find.....he cut and welded it lol. It isnt bad im just worried cuz when i do mess around racing and whatnot i tend to shift very hard and im worried about breaking the weld. (doens't look like a very good job) and as far as getting an actuall STS, ive had then before and broke them in half!!! lol so idk just felt like sharing!

I use a product called plastex. It comes as a two part plastic weld. You basically groove the plastic like you would a steel weld, then place some powder in the groove. Put a few drops of liquid on the powder and it makes new plastic which "welds" the two pieces together.

just cutting it in half will make it harder to shift because the leverage is completely changed. imo i dont think its worth aesthetics to make the car more difficult to drive. just get a short throw.

Get off his nuts guys, Idk about you all but the 6mt short shifter look is MUCH more appeasing in my opinion. The 5 speed feels better. My buddy cut his AE shifter and it felt much better. I personally like the lower look more but that's just me. If we're going to talk about "cutting it just for looks" being bs than your body kit + rims are also a "waste" of time. If done right on a 5mt or 6mt it looks pretty nice. I'd love to do it but with-out having an extra 6mt at hand incase I mess up I haven't.

Oh, and last one, the "blacking out your headlight housing" must also be a "waste of time" huh?

Good luck.

Now THAT'S a good answer. I'm sure the cut one knight has though feels pretty awesome being low, and looks pretty nice too. I hate to admit it but I also look at my 6mt (with the sts mod already and e-s bushing) and wish it was shorter though.

I've done this for a couple of guys now and I have heard no complaints. I haven't put it on my car yet because I am having issues shifting in the cold weather, but I did get to try it out on the first car I installed it on and It was surprisingly easy to shift. As soon as I get my new slave cylinder installed I will be putting the short height shifter on my car.

The 5.5 gen 6sps are cable shifted and are inherintly easier to shift. Ther is no difference in shifting difficulty. I did the same mod on my older altima and it was a little more difficult but not enough to be a nusciance.
