Noisy Console Shift Interlock on 2K3 Automatic

Max'ers:
I have searched for an answer to my problem.

When driving my automatic, each time I step on the brake, I hear a click from the shift console. It is the interlock, I think, that prevents the car from getting out of park unless you have a foot on the brake.

Well... it's getting louder and more annoying each time you press or release the pedal.

Is there a quick fix. Is there an easy way to get the console off to solve the problem?

Thanks

Vic

I started noticing that same sound when my car, some times, would not let me shift out park. It could have been always there, but I never noticed it before that. This started happening more often, up to the point that I had to start using the shift lock release button to get me going (I didn't realize that my brake lights weren't working either while I had this issue). In my case, it was a malfunctioning brake switch that I ended up replacing and the problem is gone. Your case could be a different part, if you are not having the symptoms I had.

There is a TSB for the Altima (same year) that supplies larger rubber bushings to fix the noise. I thought about ordering it at one point but backed out (seems complicated in that area).
