Tire Shopping

I have a 2003 Nissan Maxima Titanium Edition and need replacment tires. The car is stock, has the stock Titanium Edition wheels, not lowered or modified in any way. What is the biggest tire I can put on the 17 X 7 rims?
Is it a 235/50/17 or a 245/50/17. Thanks in advance for all the help.

I don't know if they are the biggest you can use on stock rims but I have 350Z rims and I'm running on 245/45/17's with no issues. For my stock rims I have 245/50/17's.
Oh, and I forgot to mention that I have 3mm wheel spacers up front and 5mm's on the rear.

If tires are sized excessively oversize, they will underperform in comparison to factory spec'ed tire sizes. Of course, assuming all other factors are constant. I would reccomend staying within 1 increment over factory spec. Also there are several graphical tire size calculators out there on the web. Search within this forum and you shall find.

The stock size is 225/50/17, not 255/50/17. There should be absolutely no issues w/ 225/50s but I cannot speak for 255/50s.

Why would you want to put a bigger size tire on a stock rim than factory spec? The ride might be a little softer, but they will look bad and your speedometer will be off.

First, wrong forum. Second, you do not need to run factory spec tires on stock wheels. I and a lot of other members run different dimension tires on stock wheels. 235/45-17, for example, works fine with stock wheels without offsetting speedo/odo.

Not trying to start an arguement by any means, but a 235/45/17 tire will result in speedometer error. When the speedometer reads 60mph, actual speed will be 58.7mph or 2.2% slower.

There is a 0.5" reduction in tire diameter for the 235/45/17 as compared to the 225/50/17 factory spec. tire.

I would go with 235/45/17. Nice low profile look with some extra reinforcement.

As far as speedo goes, If you go 245/255 I think your speedo is off a few mph and possibly effects your miles.
When I had stocks I believe I went with 235/40/17 but that threw off the mileage.

Here is a great website for the information you need for your tire purchasing decision.

Wow, I didn't think this subject was going to raise so much smoke.
Well I don't want to go crazy with tire size, I just wanted a little more meat on the pavement.
So here is another question. Why is it that when I went to the Wheelmaster link, it told me a 17 x 7" rim can fit a tire size of 235/45/17.
But when I go to Tirerack, the same tire size says I need to have a wheel width range of 7.5-9"s? Which is correct?
The Tirerack site says I can go with a 235/50/17 for a 7" rim????

I hope what I said makes sense. So what do you guys think?

Try finding good tires with the stock specs under $400 shipped. I'll take 2.1% error.

This answered my question. I am going to go with the 235/50/17. It's a beefier tire and fills up the wheelwell and is not too low profile which is what I am looking for.

Thanks much.

stick with the stock size...no need to change unless you're going to buy new wheels

This site has always served me well, even gives you % you speedo will be off & in what direction. Also strongly advises against buying tires out of a nominal change in size, check it out if you havn't already... http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCal...?action=submit
