Where in our keys is it safe to drill a hole?

One of my keys finally broke where it clips to a keychain. I went to the stealership and they want at least $90 for a new chip key. LOL, that's a total nonstarter over a tad of plastic.

So my thought is to drill a hole in the key directly into it and bob's your uncle. How far back (or to the side) does the chip go? I see its blue insertion point on the key. Alternatively, is there any idea besides drilling straight into it that would work well?

The blue square pulls out. If you are careful with a exacto knife or some small blade you could pull it out before you drill.

If the piece hasn't broken off completely and it is just cracked, you could use some heat shrink tubing and fix it. I did this a few years ago and it hasn't cracked or split.

You can drill a hole anywhere on the opposite side of the blue chip. I did it 8 years ago and haven't had a problem.

Bob's your uncle on both those options, really.

+1 on the heatshrink tubing fix. I've done that several times for people.

I should have done the heatshrink but I left this one cracked as it was or too long and after it dropped today I lost the main ring at the back. I'll definitely drill it. Screw the $90+

Another option is to buy one of those plastic key covers that you see at Tru Value.

rill in straight in the center towards the top of the key. File off the edges to make it nice and smooth.
