Two part question re: p0138/139 and Federal Emissions or Cali

Need some easy help!

1. How can I determine if my car is Federal Emissions or Cali spec?

2. How long can I drive with codes P0138 and 139....what affect will it have until I can get it changed? If I change myself..is it necessary to have the ECU reprogrammed?

I appreciate your feedback!

Puggy

Here's an easy answer for question #1:
If the number of connectors sitting in a row, between the engine and the radiator, is 4, you have a cali spec. Another way is to look for an emission label on the underside of the hood; I think the word California or NEVA is mentioned on that label if it is a cali spec.
For question #2, I'm not too sure about the answer . I hope somebody else chips in.

For the first question:

Raise your hood. Look for a shiny metal identification tag fastened to the passenger side of firewall. The top row is the Vehicle Identification Number, starting with J. The second row is model information. The first five characters are BLHUL. The 12th character is the destination:

N = Canada
V = California
U = US, not California

For the second, you can drive around as long as you want, really. I would do the reflash, personally.

P0138 is a bad o2 sensor code if im not mistaken..not so sure about p0139. I had the p0138 code a few weeks back. The cel went on and off a couple of times over a course of 2 weeks and now its off for good. Not sure why it popped up in the first place..
bad o2 sensors can affect performance and give poor gas mileage.. (may even mess up your cat in the long run)

Thanks for this great piece of advice...I guess if I were a senior memeber that now owned an alti I would be able to search better. I actually did search but couldn't find what I needed.

Thanks to all who gave advice!
