No you don't. I thought I did at one point and I'm not afraid to invest time and effort into a project. It's a great deal of work, requires modification or replacement of the non-navi wiring harness for very little in return. Present day aftermaket products blow the OEM unit away for much less.

If you're after a professional looking in-dash installed nav unit, look into a nav capable head unit such as Pioneer, Kenwood, etc. Much better solution all the way around.

I have OEM nav and can't stand it. I want to convert to aftermarket navi. Three of the buttons for the climate control broke off and now i use a nail to adjust the airflow. IMO I would go aftermarket. I regret get my max with the stock nav.

You must not have looked into this yet.

There are aftermaket products that allow the use of steering whhel controls with aftermarket head units. Check out Crutchfield.com for more info.

The largest double din unit? Isn't that like asking what's the largest 17x7 rim that can be put on the car? A double din is a double din.

Aftermarket is the way to go. I have a local guy that can install a Pioneer AVIC F700BT. That seems like it does it all.

Funny thing is that even when you put OEM nav in, you'll still lose your wheel controls...

Sure does suck. All the connections are the same. I had to rework some wires to even get the trip computer to work again... it's truly a pain in the a$$. I wouldn't recommend adding OEM nav. It looks nice stock, but looks aren't everything and I've learned my lesson.

(I'm currently working on a CD-DVD conversion for the OEM system in my 02, it really is that pathetic - and yes, I know what you're thinking, and no, I don't want aftermarket stuff because I like my flip-up screen and the stock look.)

I'm looking into adding aftermarket NAVI, too. Currently, my max does NOT have steering wheel controls.
Is it possible to add this?

Not easy to add OEM steering wheel controls to a car that doesn't have it, the wires aren't present.

I mean OEM will look really good. but you could spend a hell of a lot less money just buying a tom tom at best buy..

Think of all the other things you could spend the extra money on

Performance mods
Gas
Rims
A Cattman exhaust setup
Taking your girlfriend to dinner

.. no scratch that last one

but really i wasnt saying so much that you shouldnt get one at all, just that you're going to use it less and less. plus you can just keep a portable one in your glove box or something and plug it in only when you need it. the oem is basically obsolete at this point anyways.

plus if you get ae then you can just switch cars if you ever have to

You can get a used aftermarket integrated nav for pretty cheap on Ebay. I think they look pretty good plus performance beats stock.

I've got a cheap, windshield mounted navi in my maxima right now, Aviton's the brand name. Nothing flashy but it gets the job done, especially for only $119.00. Soon though i'll be upgrading to the Pioneer Avic-Z3.

For evryone who originally had the OEM Bose System in there 5th gen max and then put in a pioneer navigation headunit......how did this effect the sound of the speakers and the sub?

I would imagine that it wouldnt sound as good as the stock bose HU but thats just me.
