Ordered HLSD Diff, Need immediate advice

I just purchased a replacement clutch and a HLSD diff from Dave B but I am having some doubts (I don't think it has shipped yet). I have never done tranny work before but I do have access to most of the tools necessary for the job, except a lift. I am wondering if I made a poor decision in buying the unit because it seems like the install might either be over my head or too much in Labor for a shop to do. Any suggestions? Also I have searched and searched and cannot find a sufficient how to for the install. I think SR20Den did it and posted one but I cannot find it. I am currently in Iraq so INET resources are not great. Seems the cost of labor may equal the cost of a new tranny. Doesn't seems like a very sound investment for a car with 100K miles.

Thanks,

Mark

All i can say is good luck.
I changed my open diff to an hlsd unit as well. It saved me some money because it is hard to source an hlsd tranny in good condition from a 5.5 gen or 6th gen max.
The project is time consuming and requires patience if you are doing it yourself.

6-speed trannys with HLSD can be had for well under $1,000 with 1/2 the miles your car has. Look for the 04/05 model. There are more of them and they're a lot better design inside.

How much was the New unit from Dave B.?

Once you drive the car with HLSD it will all be worth it.

Could you point me in the right direction? I saw some listed on car-part.com but it seems hard to get info regarding HLSD, etc..

If it doesn't say, you'll have to call or email them to confirm HLSD. Check the classifieds here and on NYCmaximas as well, they come up sometimes

Or you could get a Spec V trans, and swap out the bellhousing with yours.

It doesn't take that long to swap out the diff, honestly. With some experience, maybe 2 hours overall for a clutch and diff job. That's with two people working on it, though.

It's coded into the VIN of the donor car and on the tranny too. I don't remember the codes but I'm sure someone here can help. A search here might turn them up too. A good bet is to get one from Canada. Nearly all the manual Maximas in Canada have the HLSD. I got mine shipped from Canada to Florida for $80.00

The good thing about swapping the whole tranny is you can upgrade to the 6th gen tranny with lower miles and save the work of cracking it open. You can also sell your old one to recoup some of the cost.

Thank all of you for your help. I have worked with Dave B and have decided that I am going to purchase a new 2006 6spd tranny with HLSD. For pricing you will have to call him. I have been doing business with him, literally, for years now.

I am going to sell my used transmission when I get back to the states (02 6spd NO HLSD, NO 3RD GEAR CRUNCH) and he will also make a sweet deal on the HLSD unit for whomever buys it) I will not be home from Iraq for another month or so, and I will THOROUGHLY test the tranny before offering it for sale to ensure the accuracy of my statements. The ONLY reason I am buying a new tranny is because I do not have the expertise to do a clutch and HLSD swap myself and the labor does not justify the work.

DO NOT REPLY TO THE SALE HERE, THIS IS NOT AN OFFER JUST INFO ON WHAT I PLAN ON DOING.

Thanks again guys and I will post my impressions on the 06 tranny when I get back home.

Mark

each? do you mean there's more then one you need? lol sry to sound like an idiot, there's no modifacations needed to put this in a non-hlsd tranny correct?

It probably would be worth it to find a 6-speed HLSD tranny, cause you figure just that differental is 563.00 then you figure labor etc, your looking about 7-800 bucks if not more total for the cost of installation.

Each as in per HLSD dif. That's all you need. And probably more like $1000 considering most places won't do a clutch job for less then $300. Cracking open a trans is expensive no matter where you go.

Yes, the labor will be expensive and that is why the job is best suited for somebody who can perform the labor themselves. If you or somebody you know can perform the work then you have it made.

And by the way did you miss the point about Dave B (the parts guy)? Why shop at Courtesy Nissan when we have the best damn parts guy I have ever met providing better prices than them and REAL customer support.

I cannot say what price Dave B will offer the HLSD for, but it will definitely be cheaper than courtesy nissan.
