Blacking out chrome window trim
hey guys, I KNOW there was a thread over here that provided a link where that tape can be bought. I tried looking for it but it's not coming up.
I had half a roll left and got the left side of the car done so it looks a bit weird lol. I forgot which site I used to get this tape from but I know I got it through a reference in the 5th gen forum. thanks!

You know the really hard part? It's where the trim curves. I had to cut a few pieces just to go over neatly over the curve. After the first window I found out a few tips that I can apply to the other side, when the tape arrives.
I normally dislike the non-stock look, but the blacked-out trim looks gorgeous on a black Maxima.
Personally, (except for tailpipes) I hate chrome trim on cars, any car. And I was bummed that Nissan didn't black out the trim on the 5th gen SE. In fact, the chrome trim and clear taillights on the 5th gen were the very things that caused me to order my '03 in Sheer Silver back in 2002. Honest, the trim was the tipping point in my color choice, and I think the only paint that chrome fits is silver.
All that aside, I love this forum for bringing up ideas like this. It caused me to research blackout tape, look at photos, and think about it.

I think we're of the same mind on chrome -- where you changed the trim and lights, I selected silver paint. If I were into black, I'd probably do the same. (And if I were really, really into black, I'd be driving a Grand National or a Marauder.)
Your car looks fantastic, SoonerFan. Nice photo.

I can almost guarantee you the paint will chip once its painted on chrome
I'll do this again tomorrow...I cleaned the surface with a dry towel to get off dirt.
Any pointers on how to apply the tape OVER the bends of the window trim? Mine looks sloppy over the bends

To the guys who have done this, where did you opt to trim off the excess tape? I kept a small strip of mine sticking to the molding b/c I found when I trimed it over the actual chrome it took away a small strip of the tape that concealed the chrome.
Hopefully I get my 2 new rolls of trimbrite in the mail tomorrow
. I will say this. On ANY color maxima, blacking out the trim looks 3894848x better than the chrome
There's an excellent photo of a black maxima with the trim half done at this thread. It looks really good, although I'd like to see some close-ups.

For that matter, I sure would like to see photos of the same on a silver Maxima.

Very detailed instructions at this link on a dark gray Altima:

I have, I took off one whole side at a time. I scuffed it up and gave it a coat of self etching primer. I then gave it a few coats of Rust-Oleum satin black for metal outdoor furniture. It's very tough paint made to be outside in the sun.
It's been about three years and it still looks perfect. No chips at all. For me, that's the only way to do it. If you didn't know any better you'd think it was stock even up close.
I did it for the blacked out look too. I swapped in the black SE tails, blacked out the headlight housings, blacked out the grill, painted the muffler flat black with semi gloss black tips and even blacked out the key holes in the doors and trunk. I don't have any pictures handy but they're on my cardomain page.

Yikes! Impressive detail.
The lower strips are really easy. They have one or two screws on the end and clips along the length.
It's not really that hard. The upper pieces are mostly held in by small screws and clips. The screws are under a thin strip of weather strip. You can feel them through the weatherstrip and take them out without removing it. The only tricky part is around the small rear window. That comes out. The mirrors also have to come off but it's easy.

Say, have you ever removed the vertical bar between the rear window and the little corner rear window? Mine are rusting, and it's driving me nuts. There's no (visible) rust on the car except for these vertical black trim pieces.
I dont like chrome either and those chrome fugly strips on the roof of my black 6th Gen started weathering. I got black vinyl from Bluebat and it looks 10000 times better. Looks like a nice mod for you 5th Genners!
Thanks, Derrick. I'm going to play with the blackout tape to see what it could look like, and if I like the look, I will remove and paint. I'm sure proper painting would look better than tape.

I'm going to play with the blackout tape this weekend to see if I like the look. But that rusty vertical bar in the back seat windows... that really has to get taken care of this Spring. I can't look at it anymore without getting bummed.
