Should I take off the stock resonator for more sound??

Hi Guys! Just wondering what you think. I've been driving around now with my cat-back w/exhaust for about 3 months now. When I first got it I didn't want to be loud so I left the stock resonator on. Just want a nice tone at idle and low deep sound when driving around. But now I want it alittle bit more louder. If I remove the stock resonator, how much louder would the exhaust get? Oh yeah, I'll be getting a y-pipe in the next few weeks. Should I just wait till then to see if the exhaust is a little louder with the addition of y-pip?

Other than the rumble, any noticable difference in performance with the Y-pipe?

I have been listening to all the talk about exhaust...and I still can't make up my mind. Starting with all stock on my 02'...do I start from the front and work my way back? Or go ahead with a stainless exhaust section and add others as they become available (I don't think the y-pipe is out yet for the 02'). Also, while I love the sound, I can't be too loud (highly subjective). I have to haul an occaisonal (sp?) client around. Also, which section gives the best performance improvement, or is a combo required for anything noticable?

In an effort to cure my ignorance, please describe the location/function of the resonator.
