Tinting question
Tinting question
I am looking to tint my grey lustre 00 max se soon. I am pretty mechanically inclined with alotta things and I was thinking of tinting my windows myself. I have tinted house windows before and installed alotta vinyls so I dont think it will be too bad. I was going to get the precut tint off ebay which from the feedback on some of the customers seems pretty decent for the price. Does anyone have experience with tinting or with more-so with tint off ebay? The only thing I am worried about is install on the rear window. thanks!
If you're pretty handy with vinyls, etc., I'd say go for it. The pre-cut stuff, not so much. I'd just stick to the rolls of regular tint and cut it yourself. A friend bought some pre-cuts for his '07 Civic and they were short width-wise?
It's up to you, though. As far as the back window, I'd definitely take it to a shop. They'll more than likely give you a fair deal, and they have to stand behind their work if they plan on making any more revenue.
Just remember: Once an air bubble is in the tint, it's damn near impossible to get it out. Personal experience...

HAHA me and my friend tried tinting his 93 mazda 626.. and we got the paper from ebay for $30... we completely messed up... if your gonna do it make sure you have another person helping you.. since you have some type of experience i doubt you'll have a problem putting them on... and I mean.... they are just $30 dollars.. worth giving it the try.. good luck on it man
I say if you have some extra money, try to do it your self. It would be a fun thing to try. If it comes out good then there you go, if not you can just rip it off and take it to the pros..
You may be able to tint the doors ok if you have experience but the little quarter windows in the rear doors and the back window and a major PITA to do them right. Take those to the pros for sure. Most places around the DC area charge between $50 and $80 for a back window. In order to do the rear window correctly (one piece) you need to know how to heat shrink the film. I'm not even going to begin to tell you how because it's a pretty long process and if you have never done one before then a Max is no place to start
TOOLS YOU WILL NEED: Squeegee, spray bottle, water, box blades, baby shampoo, some kind of object to get the gaskets at the bottom if the window off the glass to the film can slide down.
Make sure you have a spray bottle with water and baby shampoo. Use plenty of baby shampoo in the water so that it suds up when you spray it on the window. That's what helps the film slide around on the glass once you take the liner off.
CLEAN the hell out of those windows. Install the item that you will use for the gaskets and get them pulled back. At the shop I work at, we have metals that are custom bent with bungee cords just for this purpose. We use that spray bottle to wet the window, then take a box blade and "scrape" the entire window at an angle. Before you ask, no, it won't scratch the window. Once you scrape the entire window, spray again and get the water off with a small squeegee. Squeegee to one side then squeegee everything down to the bottom. Make sure that when you do all of this that the window is crack so that you can see the top edge.
Now... If you want to try to cut a top edge by hand go for it. I wouldn't recommend it. Just buy the pre cut stuff. If the feedback is good then try. It's not fun trying to cut a top edge if you have never tried. You need to do all kinds of shifting and what not to get the gaps so they can't be seen.
When you decide on how to get the film, just go ahead and wet that window back down place the tint on outside of the back window (spray the back window so the film will stick) and with the liner facing out, start and one corner with the liner and pull it off. BE CAREFUL now because the adhesive is exposed. Spray the exposed adhesive and make sure that it is all wet because if not the film could stick before you get it placed where you want it on the glass.
Once you are ready to put the film on the glass, make sure the window is still wet and try to put the front corner on first. Try to slide it below the gaskets at an angle and get it as far forward as you can. If you do it right then the back side should be able to slide right on. During all of this the top half of the film should be resting on your arms so the adhesive side doesn't touch and foreign objects and contaminate the film. Once you get the rear on just slide it down so you can get the top half on. Make a cross with the squeegee and get the piece locked down once you get it lined up to your preference. Then go from the middle up squeegeeing all of the water out. Make sure you get all of the water out of the sides. Then take a credit card wrapped in a paper towel or two and card out the top edge really well. This should be do so that the top is locked properly and won't pull off when you put the window up.
Once you are satisfied with the top half and all above steps are completed, make sure the gasket pulling objects are off the film, then roll the window up. Squeegee from the middle of the cross to the bottom of the window. It is very important to go side to side from the center of the window when doing this so that you stretch the film properly, If you don't then the film will finger and if you don't have a heat gun you are screwed. Once all the water is tapped out then repeat the credit card and paper towel on the bottom edge.
ALL DONE!!
It's a pain in the *** man....all that being said...TAKE IT TO THE PROS!
haha. It should only take them an hour and a half to do the car with two people. Good luck in whatever you do. PM me if you have any questions

wondering if you tinted your windows yourself ?
ive put tint on car windows before and was going to attempt my 00 max. the back window was my only concern......wondering who else has done it.
i was looking at the 5mil 'security computer cut' tint package on ebay.

I wouldn't buy the pre cut crap plus it'll probably turn purple.. my friend is getting 15% tint and it only cost about $150 professionally installed so that'll save you the hassle if you mess up on the rear window which is a HUUGE PITA.
I have a question too. I just got mine done, but I noticed in the front windows the tint doesn't go all the way to the edge near where the window meets the front of the door with the windows rolled up. I can still see the actual non-tinted part of the window. At night it doesn't let light through, but I still hate to see that.
It's also like that in the back windows when you roll them down. I had an Accord back in 2002, and the same shop did it, but I never noticed anything like this. Do tinters to this for a reason, or is it (my feeling) just a half-a** job? I'll try to take some pics, this is on a 4th gen by the way.
Anyone know how to do thumbnails or resize? The bigs are really big, so I'll just post the links:

Of course, take out the spaces.

Your guts are telling you the truth. There is no reason for that huge gap. Usually it is just about 1/8" gap between the edge of the film and the top edge of glass. Minimum gaps on the sides.
I bought precut tint off ebay from xtremecity, a company based in virginia beach. Their product, instructions, customer service were all great as well as their prices. As far as my personal tint job went... ehh i wish i had a professional do it. those tiny triangular windows in the back are nearly impossible to get the tint in there without crumpling the corners. I didnt install my rear windshield either because im afraid of bubbles.
if you decide to do it yourself check out extremecity
