only an intake = bad for the engine?

i was talking with a friend of mine about what i planned on doing to my 6 speed when i get it. i said i was going to get a y-pipe and a intake and he said "dont get an intake without getting an exhaust. its really bad for your engine" is this true? will i be hurting my baby if i only get a y-pipe and a CAI?

No, it won't hurt your car. Getting the exhaust with the intake is only to maximize your potential horsepower increase. More air in and more air out, but it won't hurt your engine.

The guy's an idiot, smack him. An intake will not harm your engine under any circumstance as long as you keep the filter clean. Then again, if you don't clean the filter, any intake (incl stock) will harm your engine. He probably means that you won't feel much of a gain without new exhaust. This is true, you'll feel a lot more noticeable gain if you get y-pipe and intake together.

dude, you should be careful of who you ask for an "opinion". Having an intake system and a y-pipe will only make your engine breathe better and will up the hp ante. What would be his rational? You should consult the all might ORG, most of us have been there, done that, and returned!!

oh i wasnt asking for his opinion. i was just telling him my plans and thats what he had to say about it. thats why i asked you all. i figured you'd know way more about it put together than he ever would. i didnt even think it was bad for the engine until he brought it up. thn i realized i really wasnt sure. im glad he's wrong

did the guy give yo his reasoning for saying that..... makes no sense

I think he meant that you will not see dramatic gains by just adding an intake and not modding the exhaust. That makes a bit more sense

nah, he defintely meant that it would be bad for the engine. he probably just heard it from someone and assumed it was true. he does that a lot. thanks for all of your help.

An intake lets more air get to the engine. But obviously, if you add an exhaust or Y-pipe or other mod that helps the engine GET RID of that air also, the gains will be bigger. Having a big old intake doesn't help if the engine can't exhaust the gases, also.

Some intakes have a crappy filter that doesn't filter particles out of the air very well, so they are bad for the engine. But using/not using a Y-pipe would not affect the filter and how well it filters the air.
