A/C problem

Hi,

My 2k GLE has 149k on it. I love the old girl but she's costing me too much money and the 7th gen styling has me hooked. She just has to last another month before I retire her for a 2009.

Anyway, my A/C clutch/pully are shot and making a grinding noise that is worse when the A/C is disengaged. When the unit is engaged the A/C doesn't work and the engine idles really rough. Could be the compressor went and took the clutch/pulley with it. Who knows...

I'm not interested in cool air. Driving on ECON is fine with me - the windows still work. I'm not a gear head either so replacing the unit like rmarsh3309 did isn't in the cards either. (great thread BTW).

Is there anything else on that belt? Can I simply cut it off?
Other simple cheap solutions welcome.
Thanks in advance...

I am pretty sure the A/C belt only operates the compressor. I believe the other does the p/s and alternator.

Thanks for that. I just crawled around under the hood for a better look. Unfortunately the VQ3.0 and VQ3.5 are different. The same serpentine belt that winds around the alternator also winds around the A/C pulley.

Looks like I'm screwed. The next time I drive it will be to the dealership in exchange for an '09.

Is there anyway to get a shorter belt to bypass the A/C? Not familiar with the 3.0's at all, so not sure if it's possible.

Great question Jason! Anyone know of a belt that would work?

You might want to search for a serpentine belt for a Maxima without A/C. There is a faint possibility that one exists. However, many times there needs to be some sort of idler pulley in place since the path of the belt is changed.
