I like mine, but I guess it depends what your plans are. If you are looking for an Auto-Crosser or Drag Racer there may be better choices.

Whatever you do, get a CarFax and take it to a trusted mechanic before buying.

For sure the 5gen is an awesome car. If it is your first car be careful and make sure you can handle the power.

I just bought mine last week and it is a sweet car. Not my first car but it is my FIRST REAL CAR. Prior I have owned a jetta, accord, mustang, corolla and a corsica. The max is worth more than all of them put together and for good reason.

Do some research and take the car for an inspection. If its in good shape for the right price you cant go wrong with these cars.

What makes a good first car? Seems like the car you can afford is always the best choice at the time... My Max was/is my first and I'm very glad I went it - would I have been happy with other cars? Probably.. I've been very happy with the thing though.

I've owned several cars: 98 thunderbird, 88 600HP mustang, 99 Pontiac grand prix gt. This is the first one that i like enough to not want to upgrade any time soon. All around awesome bang for the buck, especially for a daily driver.

I though when you get your first bike, you need to get a small bike. never heard you cant get a fast car as a first car.

my max was the first car that I ever bought and i'm pretty happy with it. I got it really cheap, so it did need some work, but it's never left me stranded. It also is pretty nice and quick. be smart though, dont let all that power goto your head.

my sig shows what i had.... and out of all the maxima's i've owned i personally think the 00-01 maxima was the best overall maxima made... while not the fastest, its definately the most reliable... i've never had not one problem with my 5th gen, also its one of the reasons i dont wanna change my sig... however if u want speed then 5.5 is the way to go...

my 5.5 left me stranded twice already because of APP sensor, but u made a very nice comment at the end, dont get power hungry

Torque steer is a way of life and makes you remember you're alive. But be careful because that first time you really experience it you may end up in a ditch or hitting a parked car.

I love mine and am very happy, but as everyone states have someone knowledgeable look it over carefully. There are a lot of sensors on these babies (especially the 5.5 gens) that can be costly.

I have a 5.5 gen, but if it was my first car I'd go for an 00 or 01. I think the 3.0 motor overall is probably more reliable due to it's virtually the same motor that Nissan has had for a long time (no timing tensioner or precat issues) and although less power is still pretty good and it's a great and fun car to drive.

Plus they are probably a few grand cheaper which is always better for a first car. Because you'll want to adding all kinds of aftermarket mods.

Good Luck.

test drive both and see which one you like the best...also widen your search to the I30 and I35 they cost about the same. Unless of course you want a manual.

Make sure you have a good grip on the steering wheel when you get on it at low speeds.

The Maxima is a good first car and a good last car too. I've owned over 25 cars and the last two have been Maximas. A 99 and now a 2k SE There fast, reliable, and dead sexy.

...especially since they made the I35 all the way until 2004 so your odds of finding a low mileage version are easier than an '03 Maxima.

I had a '99 for my first and an '03 for my second.

In my opinion, the maxima is a good first car.....or second car, or third, or sixth or tenth car.

But also remember that you are asking on a maxima enthusiast forum. The answers here might be slightly biased.

Another thing to consider is that the 5.5 gens are known to burn oil

The max is a awesome car but if you're young and this is your first car I would get something a little bit cheaper in terms of repairs.

The Max, especially the 3.5 is no joke, you will replace parts.

I would get a Accord or something personally.

Why are both your crash examples so innocuous?
You might also hit a crowd of pedestrians.

I honestly can't think of a better first car. I got mine when I was 16, and I still absolutely love it. It's been reliable, gets great gas mileage, has room for people, and it still puts a smile on my face I'm obviously wanting something better after 5 years and 80k miles, but I still love it to death.

I can still remember the first time I put the pedal to the floor and overwhelmed the **** out of the front tires. LOL, I was addicted from then on.

Pedestrians don't mess up your car that much.

Plus you shouldn't be hammering the gas if there are pedestrians around.

Honestly I have an 00 maxima for my first car, its was my grandparents car. I got it with 20k when I was 16 two years ago. and its probably the best first car in my opinion. I work at a used car dealership and i get to drive all sorts of cars and I am only 18 . The only thing I would worry about is driving in the snow its not the best but over all its a phenomenal car. You'll be happy with the car.

lmao, one of my friends first car was a 4 Door Chevorlet Cavilier Automatic.. He wrecked it within a week of owning it ON THE HIGHWAY racing a old school 350 truck... He crashed into the truck.

That was my sophomore year of high school. Then for graduation he got a used Pontiac Trans AM. rofl..

Oh yeah, it was stock.. and he accidentally pulled into a parking lot and hit some jeep...

Now he has a Semi-built heads and cammed, Built trans, full intake and exhaust and tuned.. USED WS6 Trans AM.

My 5.5gen was my first car and I love it...I don't like some of the problems with it but overall it's a great car and with small bolt-ons can be a decently quick street car.

Well it is a fast car and if your not careful it can take off. I have had a few cars before my max and none of them are so fast. For a first time car owner the max is a lot of power.
