No Tint On Sunroof??.. What is this about?

So I went today, to get a quote from Mr. Tint located in W. Spfld. They quoted me 120$ for 15-20% (havent decided yet) all around, and 35% on front and rear windshields. However, when I asked if I could receive Limo tint on the sunroof I was told that you couldnt tint the sunroof, because with the factory tint already on the glass. I was told You would have to put a layer of film on the inside as well as the outside and the heat would become "trapped" within the films and cause the sunroof to crack and break.

Does anyone know how accurate this is, considering that I have a 2K Max, and my glass, does not even have a "hint" of being factory tinted, including the sunroof. I would love to get this tinted, because when my sunroof is open, the sun is GLARING through, heating the whole car up, which sucks.

Can anyone help? I know there are members on this site with Maximas, I believe that have the 5th gen sunroofs tinted, some being limo. Im confused

Go to another tint shop, they are obviously incompetent if they are this ignorant and blind. I had my sunroof tinted 5% for $30, one layer from underneath.

dont get tints, its not worth the trouble, unless of course your state allows it.

i went to the same shop when i got my car 3 years ago they were kinda ****** about things so i walked out my windows on my 00se are factory tinted and they told me the same about the sunroof. i was going to do 35% and they quoted ruoghly the same price i was going to until i asked how long itd take and they said idk as long as it takes i said too bad im going elsewheres.theres a place in hartford that will tint them inc the sunroof and alot cheaper with amazing quality i dont remember the name but i had my last car done for 95 bucks gl man and in our redlic state of taxachusettes we can only go 50% legally

Its 35% in mass not 50% so 35% tint film should be pretty close with the very slight factory tint, the place that did mine tested my windows before tinting and came up with between 2-4% on my 02 so I didn't want to risk a ticket and just went with 50%. $120 seems real cheap I'd be concerned with the quality of their work and the film they use, I called a few reputable shops and was quoted between $195-250.

I'm sure if he's getting the front windshield tinted its just the top 3 or 4 inches that the sun visor covers when you let it down.

my 2 pennies.......im 5% all around and 30% on the windshield and i saw someone post that you wont see **** in the rain at night...he aint kidding and also there are times when its not the dark or rainy and vision is an issue..however, i have heard of this no tinting the sunroof, but it was for another reason. tint+sunroof+extreme heat= potintal for a cracked sunroof, but ive tinted mine and never had an issue and im in FLORIDA so.....take it for what its worth.gl. oh and my price overall was $150.

Dude when you open your sunroof, close the flap thing(dunno what its called) and the air will still circulate, you don't need to tint your sunroof.

Does it really still circulate inside the car with it tilted up and the vent closed???
Are there channels that let it in some place else???

Press MODE on your automatic climate and it will let air circulate.. works better on highway speeds and sunroof cracked open.. i use it during winter as Texas never gets super cold...

Thanks everyone for the responses.

I never knew the air would circulate, even with that closed. Good to know, however, I dont like closing it, because when its open, I feel like the car is more spacious. Dont know why, I just do so I keep it open most of the time. I personally love my sunroof.

Yes 35% is legal here in MA, and I'm not that much of an idiot, where I would tint my entire front windshield.

120$ is very cheap, and I was slightly worried about this. However, in my city, almost every car is tinted...very very dark and many people do business with them as they were booked unitl late afternoon Monday... The cops here aren't that concerned about legal/illegal tint and wont solely use it to pull you over since they have better things to worry about.

I plan to do some extra research of other tint shops in the area, and see about the price as well as their warranty's against bubbling and turning purple, scratches, tears, etc etc. and also find out what types of film they use. I want it to look good

It does get very hot here in the summer and I also have black leather interior, so you can imagine, which is why I would get tints. They are worth it IMO.

Dinograz, how do you like their quality of work?

I will keep everyone updated, if I decide to go through with them. O and BTW thx for lettin me kno I can tint my sunroof Limo now

There is the POTENTIAL for the sunroof cracking. Some have had it happen and some haven't. Choice is yours on whether or not to take that risk.

$120.00 is about the average price now for tints. If you do go illegal then most tint shops won't write you a receipt and of course no warranty. I believe they are using quantum tint if I'm not mistaken. On my last car I had it tinted at 20% all the way around for about five and half years and it never had any issues. Nada.

I know 2 guys that tint and neither will do a sunroof. Both say the same thing about the posibility of the glass shattering. I don't understand it myself but they do it for a living, so I'll take their word for it.

5% on the sunroof for $30 and never looked back. I needed something to keep my head from roasting in the summer time.

I got my last car tinted there and it came out good. I would also recommend picking up a wheeler dealer for $1 because there are usually 10% off Mr. Tint in the adds section.

I also thought it was 35% front and 27% rear windows in Mass? That's how i did it on my last car at least with no problems at all.

I've had multiple Honda's and multiple Mitsubishi's with sunroofs and they ALL are tinted from the factory. Something different about tint on a sunroof from the factory vs aftermarket?

You can try tint master on Airport road in Hartford. They'll tint anything. Or you can try the Mr. Tint in South Windsor on rt 5. Thats where I've got 3 of my cars done %20 all around. I have gotten pulled over once for them "not being certified by the DMV in CT".

Try Mr. Tint in Northampton, MA

He did all doors minus the rear windshield for $70. My rear is already tinted.

'Cause sometimes it's nice to have a LITTLE sun come in without going blind.

Had my car tinted 2 weeks ago, 35% all around (not front), and 20% on sunroof. Never any mention from the tinter on shattering S/R glass. Is this shattering effect related to different climates?

Why not...if you're really wanting to soak in the sun, that the reason the sunroof opens. I prefer the tinted sunroof. Every car I've owned, except this one and my 4th gen came with a factory tinted roof. The non-tinted roof always drove me crazy because of the glare. I had my sunroof tinted the same as the rest of the windows (15%). I've yet to have issues *knock on wood*, but the frost interior certainly helps make it not look so dark.

20% tinted sunroof. no cracking problems knock on wood. i did b/c i like to crack the sunroof shade open, when i do that the sun use to put too much glare on my screen... when u get the rest of the car tinted and leave the sunroof clear.. after a while you going to want to get the sunroof tinted. it also just looks better for a top view of the car... i'm actually thinking about getting the car repainted and then paint the top black and keep the sides white... sort of like a premium glass roof on the 09.... keep seeing white cars wthe that full glass roof and think it looks sick.... back to topic i say tint sunroof if anything think about your cup holder directly under the sunroof and how your drinks get warm faster....

OP youre not the only one. When I wanted my sunroof tinted I went to a shop and I was told that tinting the sunroof would cause the glass to crack and they refused to tint it.

I went to another shop and got 5% tint on the sunroof over 2yrs ago and its fine

to the ppl worried about there sunroofs cracking.
1. only the windshield can crack
2. tempered glass doesnt crack they shatter
3. I work for JNPhillips auto glass and have never heard of tint causing glass to shatter.
4. sunroof glass is the same as your door glass so if tint shatters glass why doesnt it do it to the door glass and vent glass.
5. if u tint the glass and any of it breaks there is alot less clean up since the tint holds it together
