Tranny

Are the 2003 and 2004 Maxima auto trannies the same? I think mine's gonna crap out soon and I found an 04 tranny with 4k miles on it for $1000 (VIN verified). So yes or no?

Depends, is it a 4AT or 5AT?

In '04, you could've gotten either. If you have the VIN, I could run it.

is there an instruction on how to swap it?

How to swap what? Just R&R the trans? There have been a few threads on it.

What do you if you go with the 5AT? Good luck with that...

You'd have to redo the electronics, get a new shifter, probably new mounts for the trans, possibly new axles, etc. The electronics would be the biggest PITA.

True, even swapped out ECUs would be a problem since there is no EGR on the '02/03s but the '04 and newer have them, which would make another SES light to deal with, or swap all the necessary EGR hardware over to your car.

Probably be a lot easier to swap in a 6 speed.

Not to mention dealing with the CAN system if you had to swap in the A34 ECU.
