Pinging!!!

I'm wondering if my digital knock sensor is working. My 2k 5spd pings on anything but Premium. Shouldn't the knock sensor kick right in and retard the timing. The dealer said if anything was wrong the dumby light would come on...any thoughts besides always using premium, I want to make sure it does work properly.

did you read your owners manual? it says use 91 Octane.. now i figure since the manual says use 91.. i would use 93 since they don't sell 91 in my area..

what do you think?

My 2000 5spd pings like crazy. This is using 93 octane. The dealer found no fault codes. And forget about trying to check the condition of the plugs.

I think SprintMax is right

The VQ30DE runs a relatively higher compression ratio that requires 91 pump octane fuel or higher.

Putting less than that in your Max would cause pinging, but you're right, the knock sensor should be picking that up and retarding the timing (with the side effect of dropping your performance and mileage) so that the pinging doesn't occur.

You might want to have Nissan take a look at that, but you shouldn't be running anything less than 91 octane in your Max in the first place anyways, so it's sorta besides the point, but not really

If this is true then there is something seriously wrong with your car.

Thanks for the info UMD,
The pinging started at about 30K, and has steadily gotten worse. The previous driver drove it hard, but did not cause this problem. If I could get to the plugs it would probably confirm what you said.
